I don't think this was a racially motivated failure. I think it's typical US being unprepared for major disasters. Some say, if this happened in richer areas, with more white people, it wouldn't have been handled like this. That may be true... but true in a community sense, not in a political or governmental sense. Areas that have wealthier people tend to do more to keep the community going and put more effort into their surroundings. I'm not saying poor people don't work or put in effort, but it's safe to say they aren't as accustomed to maintaining, building, and caring for their community the way well groomed middle to upper class areas are. If this happened in a wealthier area, not the government, but the people in that wealthier area would probably have a better reaction to a disaster of this magnitude.
I know not everyone effected by this was able to evacuate or do anything after the fact, but for those who could do more, they need to stop looking for someone to blame and start helping themselves more than they have up until now.
I've struggled financially before, but I never blamed anyone but myself. Rich or poor, it doesn't matter... there's no excuse for ignorance.Comment
