Create categories (Right-click, "add contacts/group")... that'll do it!

I have everyone sorted like that and then just hover over "Pending events"
to check if I've missed someones messages.

I have dealt with this in the past. I ending up just creating a new 2nd ICQ account.. In the past experience ICQ caps at 500 contacts online at once or something. Sometimes you may be able to add a contact and other times it will start erasing contacts as you try an add new contact. I started cleaning up my list and getting rid of people I have lost contact with or never even talk to. Then backing everything in a seperate database so I always have on file. Sucks ICQ is like that...

Mine keeps dropping people saying they are "orphaned" then I have to add them back
