But I don't think I could watch it happen to a close personal friend/relative, then try explaining to them after they find out, oh they will find out, they always do, that you knew the whole time and said nothing that would not be a good situation, would break trust forever.

yeah, I've been asked not to tell - I've observed that and also spoken up and it has given me different outcomes on those few occasions it's happened
if you speak up then you run the risk of the whole 'shoot the messenger' situation and losing the friendship - or being told it's none of your business and why couldn't you just leave it alone - blah blah (people love to blame and they also love denial )
if you don't speak up then you may start to treat your friend a little differently cos you 'know' and WANT to tell them but don't know if you should and for me that created difficulty with communication and affected friendships

An ex-friend of mine was a complete "playa". He was married with a beautiful wife and daughter but was the poster boy for infidelity. One night we went to a bar and he left to deal with things, telling me if his wife called me (I don't know why she had my number) to tell her we went to the hockey game.
I decided to stay at the bar and flirt with the bartender for a bit. The hockey game (Leafs and someone else) was on the TV so I watched here and there. Well things were going well with the bartender and we talked for a good hour or more. I left just after the game finished.
Shortly after I get home, sure enough, his wife calls and I lie to her saying we went to the game together and he's on his way home. She seemed content and then, just before hanging up, added "so who won the game?" Smart girl she is! I told her we won and said goodbye.
I called my boy up after and told him how lucky he was I was hitting on the bartender - and that we hit it off! If not, I would have left and never knew what happened in the game. I told him it was an omen and that I wouldn't lie to his wife again.
Of course, sometime down the road they divorced, thankfully, but he's still the same - some things never change ...Comment
