You need to think about the big picture rather than just profit per sale. Your pizza analogy falls apart because the cost price of a new membership is not a large portion of the signup price. A few more hits on your server, and an increase in the average support emails by maybe 0.1 emails per month.
You can pay 50%, still be fussy, and make more money than if you continue offering 40%. Remember,
affiliates choose to promote you, not the other way around. Some will not even consider joining for 40%.
