Popeye was always eating spinach...it "made him stronger" i'm sure kids didnt go out eating assload of spinach after watch the cartoons. kids dont like spinach. I know i didnt when I was younger.
with the ninja turtles always eating pizza and then going out and kicking ass, i'm sure more kids wanted pizza after watching it than kids wanting spinach after watching Popeye.Comment

Well, while you present a good argument, it doesn't work that way. Heres why: Pizza ingredients and pizza itself is such a large industry, there are too many things that go into making a pizza for one company or industry to really benefit. For example, what kind of pizza did they eat? Do you know? I don't. Who would be benefitting most? Farmers who grew grain to make dough? No. Tomato farmers who grew tomatoes for the sauce? Spinach on the other hand, is a very small industry that could benefit as a whole by a surge in spinach consumption. Combine that with the fact that they get government subsidization and that the government also is in control of the Navy, and you have a cartoon character that eats spinach and is in the Navy. All of the sudden you get a spinach sales boom and an influx of kids ages 4-12 registering for Naval positions. It makes perfect sense.Comment

however, there's a theory about spinach being another name for marijuana, which is quite funded. Either way, the first Popeye's strips had little use of spinach, and it became a central feature of the character in 1931

I highly doubt that children would want to eat spinach after watching Popeye. children have no money, they cannot buy products they get brainwashed into their minds as they watch tv. however, they can nag their parents to buy them certain products. Now a kid wanting to eat some pizza will nag a parent to death to order some, pizza is food that is accepted openly by all ages, its hot, delicious, and comes in tons of different varieties.Originally posted by Shoehorn
Spinach comes in one or two different styles, you have to cook it, it takes a long time. no kids are going to eat spinach man. the target market for spinach is old people.
The ninja turtles = come off as "cool" to children, children like to imitate what they see because imitation is the most sincere form of flattery and childrens minds are very impressionable. they see the TMNT eating pizza, naturally they will want to do the same thing. its all about psychology and marketing.
Spinach does not appeal to children.

That is how the spinach industry works. The kid sees their favorite daytime cartoon hero consuming vast amounts of the spinach food and beating up the bully, and immediately they feel a sense of spinach need and have their parents buy it. One the spinach food is firmly in their grasp, they squeeze the can and the spinach flies out, the kid eats the spinach, flexes their muscles, takes a puff off their corncob pipe, and quickly defeats the bully on the playground who was just moments earlier stealing their chocolate pudding with force. After that, they join the Navy and do the same thing to the Nazis in World War II. Izzy Sparber then directs a movie out of it starring Jack Mercer as the voice of Popeye.
