How can I teach my dog to wipe his feet first?

I love my tile and hardwood floors, and I love my dog, but when it rains, and I let him in the house he tracks his wet paws all over the place. The maids just came yesterday, so it isn't like they will be back soon.

Anyone have any luck teaching their dog to wipe their paws before coming inside?

right now we just have dirt all around our house since it was finished this last fall and not enough time to put in sprinklers/sod/fence so whenever it snows/rains it is terrible. We have a darking wood floor and it shows up like crazy. paw prints everywhere. Only way we can get it clean is hands and knees with just water and towels. Sucks because almost all the main floor is this wood flooring.

I put beach towels near the door and just taught her to stay ... works great when the whole dog is wet also.

You can't really teach a dog to wipe it's feet, because it's not self aware enough to understand it's feet are dirty. You might be able to train it through repition to do it habiturally everytime it say, crosses a specific mat left at the door.

"Stay" is a command he hasn't quite grasped yet. Everything is so damn exciting in his life that it is a task just to get him to hop in one spot.

what i have is an old towel by the door and each time i let him in, i put the towel on the floor and let him walk on it .

that gets rid of nearly all the surplus and if its really rainy ill just rub his paws with the towel. simple stuff really, but saves alot of hassle if i have to clean the floors.

I'll have to look into that one. We have tried all sorts of things and nothing keeps it clean from the dog prints. 5 minutes after we clean it, wherever he walks you see the prints lol. Just a pain in the ass to clean it.

Isnt that one of the wonderful things about dogs Want to teach get Hot dogs chop them up little pieces. Put a leash on him, tell him to stay, your tone even. If he stays for two second praise and give a treat. Then work a little with him everyday, alittle more time. Thats the way I learned at doggie school I took moo moo too and it works. Also practice sitting on him, what that means your watching tv or working on the computer, put a leash on him and just give him a enough leash to sit or laydown. This will teach him to mellow out and is helpful if your have non dog people visiting.

Buy him a pair of Doggie Boots then you just meet him at the door to take his boots off before he walks around.

if he can't manage "stay", "wipe your feet before entering the interior of the house" might be a bit much.

that "sit" & you wipe thing might be the ticket

we learned the dog to do it this way

pick up one of the paws
move it over the doormat. say wipe
repeat repeat repeat and reward with voice and treats

next repeat and also use a 2nd paw after that
                                          repeat etc
untill you 've done all 4 of them
after a while the dog will pick up the trick and the fun of the rewards

(must say we have a border collie :D )

Then when you say "dig" have him stand on a doormat.

My wife sewed three towels together and when the dog goes out she puts the towels down so it's like a runway.

When the dog comes in he runs the length of the towls and his feet get clean !

We just roll the towls up each time he comes in and put it by the door

We just roll the towls up each time he comes in and put it by the door

Get removable feet for him and just put dirty ones aside and put then the clean feet on upoun entry.
No seriously, thats a tuffy, I've never heard of someone training their dog to wipe their feet.

I think I need to develop a static mat of sorts that will allow a dog to roll over and clean themselves. Kind of like a lint brush.

Hey, I have a question for you.

I was talking to this chick the other day that said when you let your dog swim in the ocean you should give them a half hour before putting them in the car for the ride home as the salt water gives them explosive diarrhea.

You experience this phenomenon with Gigi?
