I believe that some of the stuff happened as sorts... and thus, there'll be evidence of it. But seriously, how long ago was it written, and by how many people? It's like phone tag at best.
The world flooding? Please, they hadn't even discovered most of the world at the time, so to make such a claim is impossible.
The world as far as they knew it (a few hundred miles?) flooding? That's entirely possible. In which case, they would need a boat big enough to hold a hundred animals or so. A huge feat back then, but no where near what a church would have us believe today.
So yeah, I believe a little of column A and a little of column B. No one could come up with the whole bible/christian story on their own without there be some essence of truth somewhere along the line. But how much that truth got twisted and changed over time is one thing we may never know.
