The looting, while unfortunate, doesn't shock me. It's like putting a kid in a candy store. If you have lots of people that can't afford plasma tv's a minority of them will take the opportunity to steal it when nobody is around to stop them. Most people, regardless of how poor they are, did not loot. Some of the looters were children, adolescence. It doesn't make it right, but it's something that is bound to happen given the situation. If they can be rounded up and justice meted out to them (put in jail) that would be ideal.
With regard to race, I'll leave you with one thought. A black guy once told me that until I have a child I will never understand what it's like to be a father/parent. I can try to intellectualize it, but I can never really know until I experience it first hand. I can only understand it on a superficial level. He said that being black is a lot like that. He said I can never really know what it's like to be black in a white society unless my skin is black. He said that because of this people may make judgements about behaviors without really understanding why those behaviors come to be expressed in the first place.
There is a book called Black Like Me written by a white man in the 60's who bleached his skin black to live as a black man in the South. He discovered many revelations that he could never contemplate until he changed his skin color. I don't know how the procedure is done, but if you think you know what it's like, maybe you can try it for yourself and see what it's like to live as a black person. I don't think any of us will, because somewhere deep inside, we know we wouldn't be treated the same.Comment

This argument reminds me of a discussion I had with a black friend. I was telling him how blacks need to take more responsibility for their own communities and so forth. He started telling me that White people have problems in their communities too so why was I only focusing on black communities. Every time I pointed out an issue in black communities he would say the same thing existed in white communities. The discussion went nowhere. I was trying to show him that the problems exist disproportionately higher in black communities and that's why they need to take more responsibility because that's the only way it will change.
