Most porn actors come into it with little, many leave it with little, some go on to be directors, agents, make up artist, camera men and some become lawyers.
I support what you said in the two above paragraphs.
Additionally, IMO, we porn performers are a cross-section of society; as such, some folks might end up like the thread-started opined while others might become thriving and contributing members of their communities, businesses, and geographical locations.
I certainly do not expect to "have nothing to live for" once I retire down-the-road; indeed, I am VERY happy and seemingly well-adjusted and productive. I'm looking forward to the boy/girl scene I'll be performing in tomorrow for Elegant Angel with 22-year old porn starlet Brianna Love, a young lady who seems responsible, conscientious, and well-grounded!
