You do realize that overeating isn't the only cause of being overweight, right? Some people are just genetically predispositioned to be overweight. My closest friend never overate (in fact, she eats less than me) and goes to the gym thrice weekly yet she's 10 sizes bigger than me.

Heard it all before, 99.9% just don't buy it. Your body is like a machine. Fuel in (calories) - fuel burned. There is the odd case of thyroids and some other genetic stuff that can actually make it medically difficult, or at least more difficult, to burn off fat but in the end it's most often a simple equation.
I'm a 6'0, 195 pound pretty athletic guy. My base metabolic rate burns off about 2500 calories a day. Plus another 1000 in cardio and up to 1000 more calories at martial arts each day. So _I_ can eat about 4,500 calories a day without gaining weight. Currently I aim for about 5000 because I'm trying to build more muscle. Now why does this matter, well I'm just using it as a baseline. I know girls that probably have a base metabolic rate burning ~ 1500 calories or slightly more a day. The same girl has mcdonalds for lunch, 3 soft drinks during the day and dinner with extra fats (butter, mayo, cooking oils etc) and can't figure out why she's gaining weight because she "hardly eats anything".
