Bush used funds directly related to levee repair on 17th street levee that was breached, for Iraq.

At least nine articles in the Times-Picayune from 2004 and 2005 specifically cite the cost of Iraq as a reason for the lack of hurricane- and flood-control dollars.

n early 2004, as the cost of the conflict in Iraq soared, President Bush proposed spending less than 20 percent of what the Corps said was needed for Lake Pontchartrain, according to a Feb. 16, 2004, article, in New Orleans CityBusiness.

On June 8, 2004, Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana; told the Times-Picayune: "It appears that the money has been moved in the president's budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that's the price we pay. Nobody locally is happy that the levees can't be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us."

One project that a contractor had been racing to finish this summer: a bridge and levee job right at the 17th Street Canal, site of the main breach on Monday.

Bush and Iraq are DIRECTLY responsible for this in more ways than one. Funds have been used for Iraq for years. And this is not new.

This is just ONE EXAMPLE of how funds used for Iraq could've been better used at home. The fact that funds directly tied to the 17th levee breach, we used for Iraq speaks for itself.

this is what happens when you do not protect homeland.

On the news they said Bush will stop in Alabama, do a fly-by of Mississippi, then stop in New Orleans to speak. The last part of the trip might be changed though.

But Bush was avoiding an in-person visit to the worst areas of New Orleans, mostly drowned in rank floodwaters and descending in many areas into lawlessness as desperate residents await rescue or even just food and water.
Instead, the president was taking an aerial tour of the city and making an appearance at the airport several miles from the center of town.
