PETER CAVE: As the ashes cool at Woodstock an even grimmer picture is emerging of the famous American rock festival which ended in rioting on Monday morning. Police are now investigating at least four alleged rapes.
As North America correspondent Michael Carey reports, witnesses say there are more attacks yet to be reported.
MICHAEL CAREY: It was supposed to be a weekend of peace, love and understanding. Instead it looks like the latest restaging of the most famous rock festival in the world will go down as a disaster of looting, burning, and apparently, rape.
So far four women have come forward to claim they were attacked at the festival, three of them say they were raped in the camp ground. Even more shocking -- one woman claims she was raped in the middle of the so-called mosh pit, the frenetic crowd in front of the stage.
New York State Police Captain, John Woods:
JOHN WOODS: She is 24-years-of-age and she states that on Saturday evening while Limp Biscuit played, somewhere in the vicinity of the east stage, down in front of the audience, she was first sexually abused and fondled by two unknown white males, and subsequently raped by one of them. And after the incident she body-surfed out of the crowd because she felt that was the only way for her to get out of there. And once to safety she sought out a security guard who took her for medical attention.
MICHAEL CAREY: This woman who was attacked in front of the stage -- in the crowd in the front of the stage -- what did she say the people around her were doing while this was taking place?
JOHN WOODS: Basically she indicated that everybody was moshing and moving to the crowd and that really no one was paying any attention to her, and she felt that if she were to scream out that probably no one would hear her or pay attention anyway, so she didn't bother to do that.
MICHAEL CAREY: The organizers of the festival -- already reeling from the rioting which took place at its close -- have played down the rape claims, even questioning whether it would be possible to sexually assault someone in that crowd.
But other witnesses are coming forward. One volunteer working as security at the festival has already reported seeing five other assaults in the crowd, including seeing one woman attacked by a group of men. But he claims that neither he nor the official security guards who also saw the attacks could get through the crowd to rescue the victims.
