baddog, you mentioned the one thing that i've ever tried and seen work outside of exercising the dog until he's dog-tired.
you have a high energy dog breed, have you taught him frisbee yet/gone to dog beach? i bet he's a natural!
He's just following along with a "popular" camp of dog breeding. Was some disney animal trainer rocket scientist who pioneered all those techniques... I prefer to go with a Cesar Milan type of viewpoint personally.
