HOUSTON, Sept 1 (Reuters) - An operation to bus more than 20,000 people from New Orleans to the Houston Astrodome has been suspended temporarily because shots were fired at helicopters being used in the evacuation, a local government spokeswoman said on Thursday.

"We were told they are shooting at Chinook helicopters and the operation has been put on hold until daylight," said Gloria Roemer, spokeswoman for Harris County Judge Robert Eckels.

She said the military helicopters are being used to take evacuees who have been sheltered at the Superdome in downtown New Orleans to the staging area where buses are waiting to take them to Houston.

"It makes you think 'what is going on?'" she said.

Rescue workers shouldnt have to be worried about being shot at while trying to rescue people ON american soil. It's one thing to assume the risks of a rescue worker, maybe you line gets hung up, a worker gets swept away from the current of the water but to try and save the people who are firing shots ar you? Yeah I just heard that on the news. It's just sick. The awesome guys down in NO at directNIC posted on their blog info from a police officer they're sheltering. Hearing that side of the story is just insane. Basically no police force. No radio contact, no HQ, 30 police officers have quit over the last couple days. One of the dry streets turned into a flea market where people are swapping the shit they stole. It's pretty sickening. Take all those motherfuckers and shoot 'em all.

Believe it or not rescue workers get shot at on a daily basis around the country, and you don't hear about it much.

In this case it is even more shameful, but it happens everywhere. People shooting at fire trucks, ambulances. I just hope none of the rescuers die while helping people. It sounds like they are saying 1000 could be dead.

Who is "they" though? Surely not everyone of those people down there are being total idiots. From what is being reported it appears that a bunch of thugs with AK47s run certain areas (turf). This is the same as any other city except these idiots were flushed out of there normal slums and in with the general population. They have no social skills and belong in prison.

So if it's not a civilized country it doesn't count? I've seen more guns in Canada owned "illegally" than I have in the U.S. Is Canada a civilized country to you?

Whether it's civilized or not, those shooting at helicopters are, without a doubt, have illegal firearms. There has been a growing movement in the United States to give citizens legal permits to own and carry firearms, to protect themselves, family, and property. I'll bet you whatever money you want, that those who have them legally, are not firing at helicopters.
