    Redhat/CentOs or something similar (Freebsd sucks)
    1gig of ram
    120gig of hd
    p4 2.4 or better cpu
    tier1 bandwith

              try hosting mysql related things on a freebsd box and then do it on one of the others and watch the difference.

                Freebsd has some problems with mysql but you can see this problems
                only if you're a heavy mysql user which by the specs of the server
                you're looking for I wouldn't think so.
                At this level freebsd should act as good, even better, as far as mysql is
                concerned.

                          FreeBSD 6.2's mysql performance is excellent with the proper tweaks. Sounds like whoever set up the FreeBSD server you had running MySQL didn't know what they were doing.

                                          I answer myself... oh because they don't want to compile kernels correctly.. i see... 99% of all hosts wont touch the kernel or know the hardware in any of their machines.. thats why they have to choose those routes and pass the cost on to you
