    I don't care if I had to walk out of town. I HAVE been homeless and poor, and if I had children in that situation, I would do whatever it took to save them, and that means NOT putting them at risk by staying when the storm was coming in.

    The stuff being stolen has NOTHING to do with survival at this point. It's just people acting like animals.

    I respect your opinion but look at it this way, they're estimating electricity will be out for almost 2 months. Schools are closed. Businesses are destroyed. Food/Shelter/Clothing will be an ongoing issue unless U.S. Government really steps up relief to the millions of people effected.

    Now, if you lost everything, would you really play the moral card and not take the chance of solidifying your own self by possibly looting a store? Get fucking real.

                                        I suspect that your answers would be different if you where a business owner there now.

                                        food, diapers for the kids, water - ok - I understand and I would go after these types of things if my kids where going hungry - but the other actions with people grinning ear to ear with handfuls of jeans, suits, electronics, jewelry, etc... doing this type of theft should be prosecuted - these people didnt even care about the cameras or try to hide their faces - I wish that the police keep the tapes of this and go back in a few months and start prosecuting the worst offenders - but I highly doubt anything would ever be done like this.

                                                if you feel it's necessary to share with us your past hardships that is fine and i personally know how it feels to have nothing and have to work your ass off to be comfortable. But what Potter was saying is that in a time like this when people have lost children and families and have no shelter, is it right for us to sit here and pass judgement on a few people who have in the past few days given an entire city a bad rap. Instead of passing judgement on a few bad apples which are in any city, why not think about all the children and parents who are trying to survive the tragedy.

                                                                Elli, I'm not sure you know how it works there. The people that are looting already have free or subsidised everything. Housing, food, clothes, medical care, etc. is all provided by the government. They aren't thinking about taking care of their families, they are thinking about buying rims for the car that insurance check buys. Nobody will be starving in New Orleans, there are more people helping with this effort than ever and they will be taken care of. The looters grabbing food will have it better for a few days while things get set up, the people grabbing 200 watches will be selling them drugs or nonessentials when this all blows over.

There are also people that have lived there for generations and won't give it up. Look at the people that would rather fight and die than leave the Gaza strip.

                                                                                                                                There are a ton of houses under water so having food supplies would be freaking pointless. Some people are taking food, water and dry clothes and I think that's ok but some are going to the extreme.

                                                                                                                                There are some exceptions like your house being flooded.

                                                                                                                                                                            New Orleans, LA (AHN) - A spokeswoman for the governor's office describes a chilling scene late Tuesday night: looters attempting to break into Children's Hospital in uptown New Orleans, The Times-Picayune reports.

                                                                                                                                                                            Denise Bottcher says the director of the hospital is fearing for the safety of the staff and 100 children inside. Although the hospital is locked, looters were trying to break in after gathering en masse outside the hospital.

                                                                                                                                                                            The police contacted authorities, who were not able to arrive at the scene due to rising flood waters.

                                                                                                                                                                            Governor Kathleen Blanco was told of the situation and she informed the National Guard, who have also been unable to respond.

If the floods happened in any poor neighborhood, their would be looting. And there will likely be more looting in poor neighborhoods of all races than in affluent neighborhoods.
