I watched a documentary about this and it said basically the same . It was chimps specifically that carried a version of the AIDS virus that they used.
But it also said that it will never be completely known if this is how it got started. It could have been a coincidence that the first reported AIDS case appeared within the vicinity a year after the vaccine injections. Thing is, all of the vaccine was used and has been gone for 50 years so nobody has access to the original samples to see if they were laced with the AIDS virus.
Imagine knowing that out of trying to do good, you wound up unleashing something that has killed millions.
