I definitely think he is one of the best, because he SAMPLES, which is 1000x harder than making those bullshit keyboard beats, which involves no time stretching or chopping. Even though from a business stand-point it's way better to make keyboard beats because you get the full royalty check.... but as you said, to each his own

i see where your coming from but... sampling is cake if you know how to do it. Its the hardest thing to do for most keyboard producers. And if you get a sample based producer in front of a keyboard, do you really think anything hot is gonna come out of it? i doubt it. The way I see it, its gotta be a mix of both. I personaly started with keyboard production with a little sampling here and there. Now, since I got my MPC, Im focusing heavily on sampling and trying to stay away from the keys so i can really get a feel for sample based production. Then ill go back and mix the two.

My homie, is actually trying to do the exact opposite of you and that is get into the keyboard beats, since thats where the real money's at. But the thing is, is he has been making sampled beats, with several layers of keyboard off the motiff forever, and to be honest his keyboard beats aren't sounding too hot.But I'm sure he'll develope like he did with the MPC.....Asher Hardt

Ive been using a motif too and for some reason i just dont really feel the sounds in it (most of them). You really have to tweak em out. What I do is, I run the motif straight to the MPC (since the MP has a unique sound generator and makes shit sound kinda grimy) record what i want live over the MPC drums, assign it to a pad, run the MPC thru a dbx compressor into Cubase and track everything there. Gets a good, clean but grimmy sound out of motif
