networking two PCs Windows XP - ther must be easier way

what a fucking pain in the ass, I have two PCs that share the same router, networked them so it works just fine until I reboot one of the PCs - then the one PC might or might not 'see' the other one, tried shitload of things but nothing really helped

Is there a way to make sure that this little network works ALL the time, like a 3th party application or some other bulletproof solution

              thanks, but it costs $199.95

99% of the time I only need to share small text files, so if the network is down I just upload them to one of my sites and then download them form the other PC - still faster than running with a flash memory from the one to the other ;)

                whats so difficult?

create the same username/password account on each machine
share a folder or drive on each machine to that user, with the privledges you want
map a network drive to that share
make some shortcuts, on comp-a to comp-b, etc

if your on comp-a and dont see comp-b in network neighborhood if comp-b is connected and you click a shortcut to //comp-b/sharename/ it will open, might ask you to authenticate...

                      exactly.

You think XP is a tough networking OS? Try network Win 3.11 machines or even 95. Networks used to be a lot tougher to crack. Now its all wizards and anyone can do it.

I'll give this a try, thanks

my guess is that if I reboot the router every time I reboot one of the PCs that might fix the problem, but most of the times I have programs running and don't want to lose connection on the one PC when rebooting the other one

I was hoping that there is a third party program that takes the pain away, and it's free or costs like 20-30 bucks

make sure you have the guest account enabled (some command s'thing like 'user guest enable true' - Google it) - this is what made the network actually working, before that I could never make it work

give up and use paper and pen...

..I've had a similar problem for months. Googled, asked people I know, tried all sorts and still one machine can see others but others cant see that one.

I say smash them up and use a paper and pen..but then I'd not be able to see so many lovely ladies!!!

                                Good luck!!!

most security people will tell you to disable the guest account, its like the first item on the list of things to do hardening (if you can call it that) xp

                                    Suggest netgear over linksys.

Suggest you read the instructions with either box you buy.

PCnowhere is not the answer for local networking.

Just use \\computer name that works every time even if you can't see the computer. I have the same sort of problem but I just map'd and made shortcuts to the drive on the other pc.

I use a netgear wireless router (machines are connected via cable tho)
