I did a tour back in 81 with the USAF, stationed at Warner Robbins AFB, Georgia as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist.
It was a pretty cushy tour actually - not like many here who served. Our biggest threat were the daily air raids from mosquitos or accidentally crossing a red line.
Robbins was predominately a Logistics Air Base but in the back of the base - completely surrounded by a large swamp with only 1 road in/out, was the SAC area where we kept B52's on ready alert - loaded out with nuclear payloads and many many bunkers full of nuke's.
The SAC area has since been closed - weapons and B-52's long gone (or I wouldn't have told you any of that) but it was really very cool to take apart nukes and put them back together again for maintenence.Comment

We used to change our draft cards since they were just a paper card done on a typewriter to get into bars when I was 17 - of course the drinking age back then was 18 - had a deferment for schools but went into the USN for 12 years about half of it aboard submarines and the rest overseas and then as an instructor stateside. I did just about 3years in the Army at Ft. Bragg. Fucked around and broke a bone in my wrist and had a cast on for 5 months got it off for two days and broke it again. I had to keep the cast on for another 7 months, damn that shit sucked. Ended up getting out on a medical and now they pay me for the rest of my life. Aint that some shit?Um Still BigasMoe

I had an uncle that entered the Army when he was 17 and was then shipped to vietnam and stayed in for years. He eventually became a Green Beret and was in Beirut when the hotel was blown up with the soldiers inside. Ive tried talking to him about Vietnam but he wont and makes it clear that he has no intention of doing so. I wish he would though.

I was an inst at MCT (Marine Combat Training School of Infantry)at Camp Pendleton from 1994-1997 if anyone went through at that ime there is a very reasonable chance I was one of the Inst teaching Patrolling, Offense, M.O.U.T. and L.I.N.E. training.
I was there when Col Murdoch went down and passed away trying to cross the flashflooded river bed...
