I go from Sydney to London once a year to see my folks.

In my experience the best way to survive is:

Don't drink any alcohol
Drink loads of water - to avoid dehydration and hang-over feeling
Walk up and down every hour, and stretch.
Sleep if you can
Watch their stupid in flight entertainment.
Wear special compression socks they sell at the airport - to reduce DVT risk.
Take an aspirin today and tomorrow - also to reduce DVT risk.

My friend always takes Valium, and he sleeps the whole time. Didn't work for me, I just felt shitty and could not sleep.

My dad got DVT last year - but that was from sitting around at home all day. He got cured though, as it was diagnosed early enough.
