"Prior military"? Yeah, you must've been in the Army. In the Navy we call people who served in the military a "Veteran", lol.

I served in the Navy for 6 years, although I was never on a ship at sea. I ended up being assigned out of advanced training to a Staff Command in Japan for 4 years. We occasionally did inspections on ships in port, but I was never assigned to a unit that went out to sea.

My tour in Japan was considered a form of sea duty, so when I re-enlisted for two more years I was assigned to a P-3 squadron (I was an airdale - the aviation side of the Navy).

Since P-3 aircraft (submarine chasers) were too big to land on aircraft carriers, my sea duty consisted of being assigned to a series of overseas detachments - Okinawa (Japan), Diego Garcia (small island in the middle of the fucking Indian Ocean), and Cubi Point, in the Phillipines.

While in the USN, I was able to visit almost every non-communist country in Asia, although other than Japan and the Phillipines where I spent extensive time, the places I visited most were Taiwan, Korea and Thailand. I would love to visit mainland China someday.

I have mostly good memories, and some lifelong friends from the experience. Like most veterans from families with a tradition of military service, I have an abiding appreciation for the people that put themselves on the line to serve this country, irregardless of their politics.

It is for that reason in particular that I hate to see our troops used in such a misguided effort as that which they were thrust into in Iraq. Our political leaders failed us big time on that one, and instead of being honest with the people and cutting our losses, they have us mired in another military quagmire in a country on the verge of civil war.

I hope and pray that we can extricate our military from there before more of our people die in this badly planned out war, and that the government will then focus on rebuilding relations and improving our aid and diplomatic efforts in the troubled region that is the Middle East.

Heads should have rolled over the intelligence fiasco that led to the invasion of Iraq under false pretexts. Instead, we have sacrificed nearly two thousand American military lives (and counting); people who bravely went where they were ordered and tried to do the job they were asked to perform, even though the mission was often unclear and they were ill-equipped to defend themselves.

Why? So that the politicians and beaucrats in the halls of power could avoid accountability both for the blood loss they caused, and damage which they have inflicted upon our international standing. George Bush, Jr, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, should all give up their lives of privilege and go serve on the front lines (since they all effectively avoided service during Vietnam and were the architects of the war in Iraq) - but alas, that's not going to happen.

I'm somewhat impassioned about this right now, because last week I met face-to-face with a Gold Star mother. I didn't have much to say, I just looked her in the eye, and told her how sorry I was for her loss, and then hugged her and said I was proud of her for making the difficult decision to speak out against this terrible war.

I hope and pray that we will find a way to bring our troops home as soon as possible, and that we will be much more careful in the future in deciding to initiate wars on foreign soil, and putting our sons and daughters in harms way.

            Peace,

I wouldn't have made that statement. There are things I know, but never say because of the debriefing statements we signed at the time. I never have trusted what the government says since those days

im only 21 and I have never served in the mil or any other branch but grew up in a military family until i was 12 when my dad was honorably discharged from the military

he was a flight medic during desert storm and he cought some nasty shit over there and it almost killed it

was proven to be something that the military did and all he got was an honarable discharge

He has some issues from it but the military told him to fuck off basicly and didnt help out with any thing

ah well - he moved on now and is serving his community as a fire fighter / emt and a full time foster parent for 12 mentally retarted foster kids along with his wife

I was in the 10th Mountain Division from 92-94, 95-98, I also went to Hurricane Andrew, What unit were you with? I was with 110 MI BN. I had a break from 94-95, went to Korea, was in the Western Corridor, By Camp Grieves.

Good ole' Osan Air Base! I grew up in Mustang Valley Village and went to High School in Seoul (Seoul American in Yongsan). I lived there for 7 years. My dad retired after 30 years in the Air Force.

Man, seeing that pic of you at the Main Gate with that ROK Soldier brings back memories!

From what i understand the anthrax shots are still kind of experimental...

i refused the anthrax shot and was threatened with a court martial. this was right before i got out right as the first gulf war was underway i believe. i got relieved of duty and everything. nothing ever happened with it, and as i was out-processing no one said a word. i think at that point they just wanted to get rid of me.

i did get a shot right before we went to panama for malaria. i think it was called "gamaglobin" or something like that. it was the freakin cold, almost frozen blue liquid. the shot it in my hip and it felt like a freakin softball had been inserterted in the muscle in my ass. i literally had a tear form in my eye, because it hurt so bad. then to top it off, the nurse who gave it to me, smacks the spot where i got the shot to dissipate the serum. my whole hip turned black and blue about a 6 inche diameter area. that was the worst i experienced with immunizations. ouch. it still hurts.
