    Who quit smoking?

I have tried 3 times and it didn't work so if you quit what did you use to help? The 3 failed attempts I made I didn't use anything, that might have been my down fall.

Over 5 years ago here. I did the gum for three months, then gave that up as well.

It can be difficult at times initially, but is really worth it.

Its good to smoke and it doesnt harm you much either, esp you should read the story on "Sean Marsee" here:

        http://whyquit.com/whyquit/SeanMarsee.html

other cool stories on whyquit, show you dont need to quit smoking:

I just quit 3 months ago and so far so good. I didn't use anything, but I also wasn't a chain smoker either. It's hard, so I wish you all the luck in the world

I quit about 2.5 years ago.

I had many, many failed attempts.

Tried using the patch, gum, zyban...nothing worked! I had to go cold turkey.

What help me was calculating how much I spent on smokes in a year and a commercial I saw that said "nobody has ever died from not having a cigarette"

Might check out www.quitnet.org, TurboAngel. I never was there too much, because I didn't want to post on forums where people were talking about cigs when I was trying to *not* have one.

But they do have a neat little tool. Here's my stats:

              Your Quit Date is: 8/13/2001

              Time Smoke-Free: 1993 days, 12 hours, 9 minutes and 53 seconds

              Cigarettes NOT smoked: 69773

Lifetime Saved: 17 months, 22 days, 23 hours

              Money Saved: $11,335.19

The money saved thing doesn't factor in any price increases over the time span since I stopped. If so, I'm sure it would be considerably more.

You have to want to quit. Otherwise, nothing will work.

this is true. i havent smoked since Sept 06, and I didnt use anything. Just decided to quit and stuck with it.

A friend of mine did quit with me, so I think the accountability might have helped too. Ask a friend to quit with you and make sure youre both serious and will stick with it.

The main thing to remember is that if you give in, and smoke a cigarette...youre admitting that youre a weak person that has allowed nicotine to make their decisions for them.

See the link i posted above about whyquit but i think i should tell my own story too:

I smoked heavily for around 5 years, and cut down for the next 2. After some serious stomach problems, aggravated IBS and psoriasis over my legs i decided to quit but found it hard. The IBS was just embarassing but the psoriasis was a pussy deterrent. For 3 years more i was a light smoker (10 cigarettes a week maybe) but things didnt improve.

My doctor told me it could be severe reaction that could lead to something dangerous, possibly ultimately throat cancer, stomach cancer or bowel cancer. Thats all i needed. I quit the next day.

After 10 years of smoking, i just quit and havent smoke since but I still have the same 10 pack silk cut in my car (with 5 cigarettes left in it) and no temptation to smoke them whatsoever (been clean for 3 years now). Ill probably chuck it away soon. My health problems have improved a lot since then and i feel way better about just about everything.

Just boils down to will power. If you wanna be a success in this or any industry you have to be a strong person otherwise you (to use a US phrase) will just suck all your life.

oops - must have hit the wrong button.

i smoke - it sucks. dunno about the above post - never heard anything about an severe reactions to cigarettes like that. smoking increases chances of many cancers not just lung. my uncle got bladder cancer, doc got it early but when he came in to see my uncle after the surgery he told him that if planned to put another cigarette in his mouth then he would have to find another doctor. he quit - he was a lifelong string bean, within a few months he was a roly poly guy, so strange to see someone whose been skinny their whole lives get chubby - didn't look like the same person.

                                        Smoke free for two+ years.

#1 Lower your nicotine intake by smoking something like Quest cigarettes for a few months.
#2 Get some hard candies to suck on when you have the urge after you quit.

I smoked Quest for about a year and it really helped me go cold turkey I barely had any side effects after quiting.

I was a very heavy smoker. Been smoking for 20 years. Tried many times, and failed every time. I quit Dec. 28th. Hubby still smokes (outside now), so cigs have been right here...could have cheated any time. The difference this time is that I REALLY wanted to. All the other times, I was trying to quit because it was what I was supposed to do. This time....I wanted it. Twizzlers and Jolly Ranchers helped a lot.

This may sound odd but try this. I quit 2 years ago, I tried the patch the gum and other methods, (Nothing worked). I figured out after lots of attempts that one of the problems was dealing with the action of smoking.

What I mean by that is having something between your fingers and lips (Insert sexual coments here). I bought a bunch of minature carrots and ,along with using the gum held one like a cig everytime I felt the need.
I smoked for 20 years and my mind became addicted to just having one in my hand all the time.

It was funny because when I was smoking the carrots as a substitute I would catch myself flicking them just like a cig...

After around 2 months of using the carrot method I slowly cut back on how often I held them . I have not smoked since, If you dont like carrots you could always use something else.

The carrots where very close to the size and weight of a cig. So they where well suited for the job.

my long-ass post just got lost before it was posted :-(

but the bottom line is - as baddog and others have said - you have to WANT to.

the physical addiction wears off quickly. the problem a person faces is a MENTAL addiction - and that's based on WANTING a cigarette at a certain time, in a certain environment, etc. - and THAT means the person doesn't completely WANT to quit.

It all comes down to wanting to quit and WHY you're quitting. If your desire and reason is strong enough quitting gets a lot easier.

Family, health, loved ones, taking too many 5 minute breaks during work, money, smell, etc. You have to find your reason to quit besides "it's the right thing to do". If you don't have a good reason to quit then you'll never quit.

I smoked pretty heavily (30-35 cigs a day) for about 4 years in my teens (13-17), but then one day I just stopped because I hated getting questioned by my folks. Maybe not the best reason, but it worked for me. Now I don't smoke because all the smoking, drinking, and drugs in my teens has fucked up my liver to the point that every doc says I'll need a transplant before I'm 35 even if I didn't smoke/drink until then.

Now I only smoke when I drink (yeah, my docs hate that), which isn't much. I probably had a dozen drinking/smoking days/nights in the past 3 years so I'm happy.

My dad quit smoking after 40 years of smoking because we kept HOUNDING him until he did and then one day he just went cold turkey and I can't even remember how long he's quit now, at least 8 years.

So basically, you have to really get a good reason to quit (good enough for you) and then have the desire to quit. But like most people have said, quitting isn't a permanent thing so you have to always remember your reasons to not start again.

Good luck, it's a hard thing to do.

                                                    Good Luck.....
This is why I used Twizzlers. I could hold them in my hand and just take a bite once in a while. Helped a lot.

                                                      visualize and clove

Visualize a man-sized multi-legged tobacco bug or worm gripped on your back and sucking out your energy every time you smoke. Tell that worm to fuck off and go away, you're going to stop feeding it in 30 days.

Buy two packs of those hippie CLOVE cigarettes. Ration it down so at the end of a month you finished them.

                                                      That's it. Have a nice smoke-free life.

quitting smoking is hard, ill admit. it was a lot easier for me when i moved to california with my girlfriend (probalby because she doesnt like smoking). however, when i go out with friends or shes not around, usually i sneak a few in.

but during the day, i do find myself chewing on staws, tooth pics, or anything else laying around. worst part is after i eat i would always smoke, so now the urge is to eat something sweet like cookies or something. i guess gaining a few pounds is better than smoking

I quit smoking 16 months ago and haven't had 1 since. The will power was my motivation and proving that I could do it with nothing else worked. I didn't eat more, I didnt drink more... I was however a fucking prick for the first 35 days...lol so I stayed home... I guess it set in that smoking is fucking nasty too.

Patches worked for me. Took the strong ones for two weeks, then the weaker ones for two weeks. I was surprised how easy it was. I had smoked for years and tried many times to quit cold turkey before that too. Been about 5 years since I quit and I honestly have zero desire to smoke now.

I think if you are a heavy smoker you need to ween yourself by using patches as it's quite an addictive drug and unless you have extrodinary will power it'll be very tough to go cold turkey.

The worst is when you're in a movie theatre and the people next to you reak like heavy smokers, it's horrible. Well good luck with the new life, you have a strong determination and you should help others here quit a habit that will kill them.

The bottom line is if you use something, you take away from yourself and in most cases are still using nicotine. Quitting by using the drug you are trying to quit is using, not quitting. Either make friends with smoking and accept and enjoy the fact that you are a smoker - or get fed up and stop being so willing to accept excuses from other people (or yourself) to continue smoking and just quit once and for all.

Not to be a total hard ass or whatever but your down fall was you... smoking. You had it beat, but then you beat yourself by lighting up. It's your choice to buy cigarettes and keep them near you, it's your choice to put one in your mouth and light it and continue to suck the cock of RJ Reynolds.

There was recently a news article that the amount of cigarettes in the past 10 years has gone up 11 percent, to make it harder for people like us to quit so these corporate scumbags continue to buy their suits with our souls. Do you enjoy allowing these pencil neck, pencil dick suit and tie types to have more control over you than you have yourself?

NEVER be a slave to anyone (unless you're making damn good money for it) - you're paying these assholes pretty good money for the lazy persons' suicide machine.. I gave these pieces of shit over 20 years of my money and control, cigarettes strongly contributed to more deaths in my family than I can count... you have got to reach the point where it's more than enough or you'll never do it. You have to regularly remind yourself of the pros of quitting and the cons of smoking along with your commitment to yourself to succeed.

Either you smoke or you don't... Be your own friend and don't fight yourself for whatever decision you make. Whatever you choose, do it all the way... for life.

                                                                                    All the best to you

I got scared when I couldn't go to sleep for 2 weeks without first choking on I don't know what and then finally one night I coughed up about a cup and a half full of unidentified clear liquid from my lungs. I never went to the hospital because i'm hard headed but everytime I craved a cigarette I just chewed a cinnamon stick... that worked great. No more problems.

I have smoked for over 45 years. I actually love smoking, but it is just a dirty habit and ofensive to the majority anymore. They make it difficult to smoke. After quitting, I could see why. My downfall is Vegas & the slot machines. When I go, I do a stupid thing & allow myself 4 Ultra light cigatettes a day while gambling. When I come back, I have a few demons, but not all that bad. Just not having any around & not buying any helps it pass in a week. Here is how I have quit:

I started cutting back a month before quitting, laying out less and less cigatettes a day for consumption.

NO smoking in the house. I have to actually quit what I am doing to go smoke. That in itself breaks some old habits.

When the cigatettes on hand are gone - buy NO MORE. It is easier if you are not around them, so no cheating is available. If not, it takes a whole lot more will power. Never buy them.......

Zyban (wellbutrin generic) helps keep you from being too grouchy, and the patch. It will make you sick if you have more than a couple of cigs while on the patch. That is also a deterent.

Drink water or maybe a piece of hard candy for the urge. At first I carried a bottle of water, just like I did cigarettes. Never left home without it.

Good luck! Don't expect it to be easy if those around you smoke. If you are not around smoking - I found it not hard at all. Just don't dwell on it .Heep busy.
