ePassporte Boss Arrested In US

An executive of privately held payment processing business ePassporte has been arrested as part of the ongoing US crackdown on the gambling industry. John Lamont, the company's chief executive is being held at an undisclosed location in Curacao, Dutch Antilles where operations are based. The company was widely seen as immune from any form of such risk due to a significantly lower exposure to the online gambling industry than its larger, troubled counterpart NETeller, another online payment processing company.

Less than two weeks earlier shares in NETeller were suspended on the day Stephen Lawrence, the company's former chairman, and John Lefebvre, the former group president, were both arrested. Mr Lawrence, 46, was detained in New York while Mr Lefebvre, 55, was held in Los Angeles.

It is unknown for how long Mr Lamont will be detained but the company is widely known to provide ewallet services for online gamblers and has continued to do business in the United States despite the country's crackdown on internet gambling. Most companies pulled out of the US last year but ePassporte was not directly involved in gambling and a larger proportion of its business is believed to relate to the adult industry.

Prosecuting attorney Michael Santonio said "Criminal prosecutions related to online gambling will be pursued even in cases where the entirety of activities are carried on outside the United States."
