Quick trick with the inbuilt flash: put a tissue over it to diffuse the light and soften it. Just be careful you don't set it on fire as the flash puts out a burst of heat.
An external flash will allow you to bounce light off the ceiling but on a little Rebel XT it will feel very unbalanced.
