The other night a commercial was on TV for an upcoming movie titled "September Dawn", starring Jon Voight and Lolita Davidovich. It is a movie set against the backdrop of the Mountain Meadows massacre in Utah, which was led against a group of settlers by Mormans and some Paiute indians.
The numbers are disputed, but most accounts indicate that upwards of 100 men, women and children were systematically and brutally killed. The cover-up in the aftermath was equally heinous.
My wife had never heard of this event and was shocked. I told her it was true, and that it was one of the more shocking events in U.S. history, although it was mostly brushed under the carpet, like many similar stories regarding the violent history of this country, which was why she had probably never heard about it.
I was more surprised that someone decided to make a movie addressing this event, since it has been largely overlooked in public school history text books.
It will be interesting to see the reaction that this controversial movie brings...
