It serves another purpose as well. If a program goes down I just change the link once in the script and all the links going to it are automatically updated.  No more changing links on thousands of pages if a sponsor goes out.

You can't do that if you're using galleries to promote your sponsors. Not a single big TGP/MGP would allow it.
