It's gonna get harder to fly...

"Secure Flight" got a nod from Homeland Security last week --

The gist: to fly, you have to be on an "approved to fly" list.

WASHINGTON - Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has called for airline passengers to provide more personal information to the government to gain privacy, according to today?s edition of USA Today. The American Civil Liberties Union denounced the move and pointed to the consistently poor reviews of the Transportation Security Administration?s Secure Flight passenger screening system by the non-partisan Government Accountability Office.

Hmm... just yesterday I read an article stating the exact opposite. The FAA wants to loosen up security and give more judgment calls to the TSA workers.

"Approved to fly"? WTF? We got the EU trying to lessen the hassle of cross-border travel within the union, and now here we have the US trying to increase it for domestic flying? If that ain't fucked up, then I don't know what is... Next thing you know they'll put customs between US states...

not surprised, the FAA is beholden to the airlines for all kinds of fees. but i think homeland security (aka "the governement that will haul yer ass to another country, keep ya locked up without process and smile for CNN") will likely be the one to decide what happens.

Most people have no business being on an airplane. Only people on business should be allowed to fly during the week. Keep the riff-raff wearing the flip-flops and t-shirts out of the airport. Those scumbags can go Greyhound.

Imagine the air fares you'd be paying if this was the case.

It would be well worth it. I will pay top dollar if I don't have to get into a cattle car with scumbags.

Trust me, when the other businessman would go Greyhound, because of air fares skyrocketing, you might end up paying much more than you ever expected, not even sure you'd be prepared to pay that. Just get a private jet and travel any way you want. No cattle around.

I guarantee I not only fly more than you, but pay more money when I do fly and spend more money at my destinations. I wear flip-flops and t-shirts all the time. Anyone can wear a suit, it takes someone with more cash to be able to dress however the fuck they want all the time and not be bound to a corporate dress code.

how much money to create a database and make ticket agents scrub against it - ? -- not much at all.

I think it would cost a lot of money and time / effort. Every flght agency in the world would have to get approval to add to the database. Phone lines would booked solid. More than one building would need to be used in support staff alone to handle it. Your point is invalid.

Everything in the above quote is 100% correct, except the line in orange. The costs of increased security measures associated with commercial aviation in the US, post 9/11, is estimated at $11billion -- paid by the airlines and taxpayers. Exactly who do you think would be objecting to this? Exactly. Now ask yourself if recent history contains any reason to expect that those objections will be heard, this time.
