i'm not much of a smoker - but have been a pretty heavy smoker since ~16.

Have quit via cold turkey on numerous occassions and have lastest (3 * 2 year stints of no ciggys). However patches have been the BEST and easiest way to quit. Am on the patches at present and it's incredible how easy quitting is whilst you're still getting the nicotine hit!

No idea re hypnosis, but if it makes it easier to quit then i'm all for it!

my dad is trying that hypnosis shit right now. He's got a friend that did it and hasn't smoked in like 5 years.

Personally, I think it's a load of shit. Sort of the placebo effect. I quit cold turkey and it was a lot easier than I thought. So far, 4 months and haven't really craved a cig since after the first week or so.

Hypnosis worked for 24 hours for me once...which at the time was a record. I found that the welbutrin worked best. These days if I ever slip, maybe once a year, i get back on the wagon with the help of one container of nicorette gum.

If hypnosis worked as well for everyone as many claim. Do you not think there would be a rash of hypnotists that hypnotise you into craving hypnosis treatments?

My brother stopped smoking about 20 years ago and still uses the same hypnotist ahead of dentist visits. I tried the same lady and she didn't work for me at all, but the next one I tried did. It was amazing to become a non-smoker inside of 45 minutes and suffer none of the withdrawal symptoms at all.

Overall, hynoptism is one of the more effective smoking cures, but the success rate is still very low. My experience suggests you have to find the "right" hypnotist for you, or perhaps it is that you have to be in the right frame of mind for your session.

I can't say about hypnosis. The patch gave me some scary palpitations though.

I am a heavy ciggarette smoker, and I will be seeking this treatment when I am ready to give up, if ever. I have a family member who has not smoked for over 15 years, who used this method in its infant stage.

WTF?? If I still gotta do it myself, then what do I need that bitch for?
I gotta send money to put in a tape??

Man if only I could do my job like that. People send me money, and I send tem an audio tape of how to insert meta tags, and set up back links...oh wait!

I think I may have something here.

Hypnosis-related anti-smoking techniques are balderdash for the most part.

I trained as a hypnotherapist about 9 years ago. I did it for about 3-4 years straight. As far as it's effectiveness for smoking, most of the studies show that it is only a little better than cold turkey. Basiclly, if you are ready to quit it will make quitting a lot easier. If you aren't ready to quit, it won't work.

The best hypnotist I knew had a decent success rate with smokers. However, she would screen out people who she felt were not ready to quit. For those that were ready, she incorporated a lot of the clients life experiences into her hypnotic suggestions, which made them more effective. Kinda hard to do with a tape.

What hypnosis was REALLY REALLY REALLY great at dealing with were phobias, anxiety attacks, and trauma (worked with several rape victims). I've seen and personally gotten rid of phobias people have had for 20 years in under 30 min. It is also pretty cool for pain control.

Never tried and i don't know anyone who tried. But i have already suggested the Allen Karrs' book to read. I have 5 friends or even more now who quitted smoking after the reading of the book.

I think it really depends on the individual. It could work or it couldn't. It's a matter of determination, I guess.

Hypnosis is worth a try. I would probably get a referral from a physician.
