Making big businesses and backwards countries do the right thing is part of it, but it still falls on every individual to do what they can. Incidently, China's government mandated gas mileage standards are far better than the US. The US automakers are suing California because California had the audacity to require all cars sold in their state to meet emissions standards that match Chinas over the next 10 years.. how dare they, lol.

I've also looked into Solar and Wind power. I currently rent, but I would absolutely love to have a house where I could have a nice solar panel (about $20,000, I've checked), and a wind generator (price varies, but utility companies are required to buy your excess energy, and there are local ordinances on tower height to consider). As well as on-demand hot water heaters and other efficient appliances I've checked into.

I dont preach to people in SUV's or anything crazy, but I still quietly do my thing and would encourage others to at least pick up a 3 pack of compact flourescent bulbs. They work great, and with only 15 watts you get the same lumens as an old fasioned 60 watt (plus they dont burn out for 5 yrs)
All my lights that will allow the swirly little fluorescents have them. Except of course my nice hanging lights in my dining room and kitchen which take special bulbs, does that mean I think the earth is becoming some sort of super hot tropical environment, or we all will perish due to the cars we drive? lol no. I use them because my electric bill is cheaper, and the lights are MUCH cooler than a standard bulb.

I dont think you can find a US Gov. admission that the increase of beetle damage is due to warming, but the Canadian gov does:

"Why is British Columbia in the midst of a mountain pine beetle epidemic?

Forests of mature lodgepole pine are prime habitat for the mountain pine beetle. The beetle also thrives under warm weather conditions. The interior of British Columbia has an abundance of mature lodgepole pine, and has experienced several consecutive mild winters and drought-like summers. Beetle populations in many parts of interior B.C. have increased to epidemic levels as a result."

I LOVE pine beetles. They've caused such a problem here that my HOA allows us to cut down any and all pine trees. That means I get a great view I normally wouldn't be able to have due to the HOA rules on cutting down trees ;)

I didnt write that article for the Canadian Government. Neither did Al Gore. Neither did George Bush.

I saw the movie and looked into some of the research, yes. Whats the problem with that? I've always said that I dont listen to someone telling me what my opinion should be. I want to see WHY they have their opinion, and form my own.

I dont really think global warming is a "debate" any more. No biggy.

142 Ive tested from 138 to 145 on 4 tests. Took one in 6th grade, 1 in 9th grade, 1 in 10th grade, and 1 my senior year. High IQ really means nothing. Its just the capability your mind has to reason and hold knowledge etc.

Im running my own loose change experiment, and getting the exact results I assumed it would. You only need to plant a seed of doubt into someones mind, and they will follow lock stock and barrel.

Tom, your last paragraph changed my views, and I'm sorry if I automatically generalized you as the type to preach. I based my argument on that erroneous fact.

Which dilutes my argument actually all together, as you and I are very much alike. I've changed almost all of my lightbulbs to the HE bulbs when I moved into my condo Jan last year. I got an auto temp for my AC that raises the temp it kicks on, when I'm not there, and lowers it by the time I get home.

I've already put in my ondemand hot water heater, one of the first things I did when I moved in. I installed ceiling fans in every room of my place, my electric bills are under 100 dollars every month. For 1500 sqft place, in Florida, during the summer, I'm pretty happy with it.

I've been watching climate change and what we can do about it not so much for myself, but for my children. This can be man made, it can be mother nature, the fact is, it is happening.

                                  Better to be prepared.

sorry but that's just bs, do u have any stats to back this up? the global co2 emissions are still rising, the USA and Australia are the only two countries that didn't ratify Kyoto and the US still pollutes the world's air the most by far. but Asia is starting to catch up, great...

funny, i also watched the movie yesterday for the first time. i really like the way it is done. al gore doesn't just give his view, he backs it up with LOTS of scientific stats and facts. anyone who says global warming isn't happening is fucking ignorant. especially those glaciers on the poles melting at a very rapid and accelerated pace and the possibility of the gulf stream reverting is extremely alarming. no more fun in the US once that happens...

The new buzz term is "Climate Change".

Global warming was the scare tactics pre 2k.

Again, no one's saying it isn't happening. We're saying it's BEEN happening for millions and millions (probably billions) of years. There have been seashell fossils found hundreds of miles inland in the US. I doubt they were dropped there by some prehistoric tourist

Ask Al what killed the dinosaurs since he has millions of years of data.......oh wait, he doesn't.

There's species nearing endangerment because the annual cycle of their prey has changed drastically in the recent years, so now their young are born and the food supply is simply not there like it has been for all known time.

I dunno, I think it's a non-controversial issue really. More people will notice at some point.

Come on, for those of you that think like this you're in for a big shocker. We have all been abusing the earth for a very long time and at some point we will pay for it.

Thats cool, Anthony. $100/mo. in Fla. in summer? Holy crap. I spend that and I only get a couple of summer months per year, lol. I wanted to get a ceiling fan to move the air in my stairwell down or up as needed, but I can't really do the work since I rent. Plus I'd probably break my neck falling down a full flight of stairs, lol.

There are areas in the states that are having the coldest winters in years, more snow, ice, etc. 4 years ago we had the coldest winter in GA since records were started.

What the problem is today is our government officials are just to eager to jump on voting bandwagons, ie porn, then pay attention to things that won't be popular, and aren't easy fixes. You just can't tell the weather to provide ecological documents to prove whether there is or isn't a problem.

The problem, the injustice, is the difference between not knowing, or choosing not to know.

A lot of "i'm smart, you're an idiot", yet i think anyone arguing the fact that there is a problem, and it needs to be solved, isn't insulting anyone.

Al Gore is an idiot, but compared to GWB? Also, in his "personal" sides of the movie, he offered a story about a family tragedy. Something about a family member dying.

The only real question is: are we to blame for it or is it simply part of a normal cycle that the Earth goes through?
                                                          depends who hires the scientist.
According to ice cores and other data (and depending on who interprets them, how deep they go back et et), before "global warming" we were on a global cooling trend. In fact, we're not even up to where the earth's temperature was 10,000 yrs ago.

I watched the movie a few nights ago. I use to think like most people that Global warming is a cycle and that we weren't causing it.

Where did I get my information from ? I never really thought about it, like a good sheep i just absurbed the shit I heard in the media and other people saying and I believed it myself.

I would say to ANYONE who thinks Global warming is bullshit, watch Gore's movie, the Inconvenient Truth. I don;t care what you think of him but look at the stats he gives and do your own research if you don't believe him to confirm what he is saying is true. Global warming is a cycle but I am finding out now we just went off the charts of the normal cycle so it is obvious we are doing something to fuck things up.

Then, come back here, after watching the movie and state your case on how Global warming is a myth. I would love to hear your proof/theories why what Gore is saying is wrong. I am open minded if someone makes a better, more believable arguement then gore it might change my mind. Until then, don't be like I was, do some research (and in particular at least watch his movie) before you start talking about something that you t hink you know as fact, when all along you just repeating shit you heard from the media and other people who have no clue.

mmm so you think global warming means, average temp this year 75, next year 76, next year 77, next year 78 in every location around the world ???

Have fun collecting all of that info and doing the math. It's total ignorance to say " but they had a cold winter, global warming is BS."

In the grand scheme of things, even a million years is a tiny blip on the earth's previous lifespan and Gore doesn't have even a fraction of THAT many years of data.

It's like calling one person and asking them what kind of car they drive, then saying "Based on our research, everyone we have talked to drives this car". It's a true statement, but limited data.

It's limited data. Period. You can't deny that. I'll again refer to the fact that we don't even know what killed the dinosaurs - huge things - bigger than humans. Many different varieties. All gone. How? Why? Perhaps the CO2 levels were a LOT worse then? We don't know because we have VERY limited data on the earth's history.

During the years when we have little snowfall in the mountains are the years we suffer droughts. There are very little ice packs, as you call it in the Rocky Mountains.

But global warming is a fact, its funny that the ones that think different are Bush supporters.

In addition to having the backing of Paramount Pictures to market this film, Gore had the full backing of the media, and leading the cheerleading charge was none other than the Associated Press.

On June 27, the Associated Press ran an article by Seth Borenstein that boldly declared ?Scientists give two thumbs up to Gore's movie.? The article quoted only five scientists praising Gore?s science, despite AP?s having contacted over 100 scientists. http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news...-reviews_x.htm

The fact that over 80% of the scientists contacted by the AP had not even seen the movie or that many scientists have harshly criticized the science presented by Gore did not dissuade the news outlet one bit from its mission to promote Gore?s brand of climate alarmism. http://epw.senate.gov/pressitem.cfm?party=rep&id=257909

I am almost at a loss as to how to begin to address the series of errors, misleading science and unfounded speculation that appear in the former Vice President?s film Here is what Richard Lindzen, a meteorologist from MIT has written about ?An Inconvenient Truth.? ?A general characteristic of Mr. Gore's approach is to assiduously ignore the fact that the earth and its climate are dynamic; they are always changing even without any external forcing. To treat all change as something to fear is bad enough; to do so in order to exploit that fear is much worse.? http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110008597

What follows is a very brief summary of the science that the former Vice President promotes in either a wrong or misleading way:

? He promoted the now debunked ?hockey stick? temperature chart in an attempt to prove man?s overwhelming impact on the climate

?He attempted to minimize the significance of Medieval Warm period and the Little Ice Age

?He insisted on a link between increased hurricane activity and global warming that most sciences believe does not exist.

?He asserted that today?s Arctic is experiencing unprecedented warmth while ignoring that temperatures in the 1930?s were as warm or warmer

?He claimed the Antarctic was warming and losing ice but failed to note, that is only true of a small region and the vast bulk has been cooling and gaining ice.

?He hyped unfounded fears that Greenland?s ice is in danger of disappearing

?He erroneously claimed that ice cap on Mt. Kilimanjaro is disappearing due to global warming, even while the region cools and researchers blame the ice loss on local land-use practices

?He made assertions of massive future sea level rise that is way out side of any supposed scientific ?consensus? and is not supported in even the most alarmist literature.

?He incorrectly implied that a Peruvian glacier's retreat is due to global warming, while ignoring the fact that the region has been cooling since the 1930s and other glaciers in South America are advancing

?He blamed global warming for water loss in Africa's Lake Chad, despite NASA scientists concluding that local population and grazing factors are the more likely culprits

?He inaccurately claimed polar bears are drowning in significant numbers due to melting ice when in fact they are thriving

I found a page with a bunch of NASA graphs too, but they trend upward *shrug*

                                                                                                http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/

I also couldn't find a graph that had CO2 emissions trending down. And the only thing I'm pretty confident when reading about this stuff is that:

                                                                                                1. CO2 is a greenhouse gas.
                                                                                                2. Globally, CO2 emissions are increasing due to man's actions.
                                                                                                3. Greenhouse gasses trap heat.

                                                                                                What am I missing?

                                                                                                - On CO2 emissions and raising temperatures, could somebody please explain this graph to me:

                                                                                                - From 1986 to 2000 central Antarctic valleys cooled .7 degrees C per decade with serious ecosystem damage from the cold.

                                                                                                - Both satellite data and ground stations show slight cooling over the last 20 years.

                                                                                                - Side-looking radar measurements show West Antarctic ice is increasting at 26.8 gagatons/yr. Reversing the melting trend of the last 6000 years.

                                                                                                - Antarctic peninsula has warmed several degrees while interior has cooled somewhat. Ice shelves have retreated but sea ice has increase.

                                                                                                - During the last four interglacials, going back 420,000 years, the Earth was warmer than it is today.

                                                                                                - Less Antarctic ice has melted today than occured during the last interglacial.

                                                                                                - Antarctic sea ice has increased since 1979.

                                                                                                - The greater part of Antarctica experiences a longer sea-ice season, lasting 21 days longer than it did in 1979.

More or less the whole world is intelligent enough to accept global warming for a fact. However, get a few billion dollar corps to pump cash in to say otherwise in the USA and the amount of idiots who believe them is amazing.
lol it's very sad but true.. Money can buy anything and it buys a hell of a lot of ignorance. As a side note don't think that everyone in the Us is accepts the spoon fed BS like this. The problem is the people with a clue don't have a voice because the politicians and too busy stuffing their pockets from all the damn big business lobbyists.

Honestly sometimes I wish al qaeda or whom ever the buggy man is this week would just drop a nuke on DC. I think a lot of the world's problems would be solved and we could start over maybe with a govt not so corrupt govt in this country. That or round up all the damn lobbyists and leave them in the middle of the ocean on a island somewhere. Hopefully one that floods due to global warming..
