This topic always turns into a "moron-a-thon." I used to be all for the death penalty, until DNA proved that more than half the guys on death row in Illinois were innocent.
Now, logic tells me that when a life is on the line, we should all be trying a lot harder to make sure we have the right person behind bars. However, if Illinois is a typical case, our legal system does a piss-poor job in its most critical cases.
So, not only don't I believe in the death penalty anymore, I have totally lost faith in our legal system.
And, BTW, have you ever thought about the guys on the Illinois death row who couldn't be exonerated because there was no DNA evidence critical to the case?...It means that some of those guys are probably innocent as well.
Quite depressin in the extreme.
