If someone is sentenced to death, the average cost (damn! can't find the source!) IS much, much more than keeping them locked up for the rest of their life.
So why not lock them away, and let the bastards suffer in solitary for the rest of their lives? No light, no comforts other than a matress and a blanket, and just enough food and medical care to keep them alive for as long as possible.
If someone killed a member of my family, and I got to them before the authorities, I'd do everything possible to ensure the bastard spent as long as possible in agonising pain...
