Too many thoughts to even attempt 1/10 of the those I'm certain are worthwhile. One of the reasons I talk about this sort of thing instead of just doing it. Forgive me if any of the following sounds naive; I've not yet written a trading script. I'm also thinking out loud.
The cheating/hitbot problem would still be there... but a third party, centralized information index, seeing badly skewed statistics, could simply reclassify the traffic type.
The protocol could sit on top of any prexisting script... It's just that the first script writer would have a bit of a jump on everyone else.
It would require traders to identify site, directories, or individual pages by niche type. All traded traffic would travel script-to-script, posting niche history info (can be multi-hop) in the destination url. Script at destination url would record ip...
This may require setting up this objective third party as a billing company that will keep track of what patterns sold, or extend the protocol to include the billing companies. But then you have to depend on their honesty. Better to have a monolithic arbiter and figure out a method that is satisfactory that ensures that there is no tampering. There would probably be a lot of initial problems as people found ways to cheat...
