Perhaps you downloaded something that is interfering with your Google results.. there are progs like that out there

Yes sorry not responding, my damn cable is going slower than dialup. I typed in something there because it used to work as a search box too and I got a popup from google explaining it and a click here for more info. I can't find the exact page it took me to that time but I found this.

I think you are hitting the "I Feel Lucky" Button which will take you to the top match.

Actually it's done automatically in background when you type in name in regular IE's address bar with only condition - you must have google toolbar installed.
Doesn't work with IE 7..... which coincidently comes with an MSN search box.
Yes I forgot about one more detail. This is due to the default setting in IE for search provider in autosearch settings.
To change it click search button on IE's toolbar then click customize in the search panel or after you click search btn., look at the lower left corner of browser for a shortcut - "autoseach settings". in there you can select different search provider, for google names to work, abviously select "google sites" ;)
