People get lung cancer regardless of whether they smoke or not. I've heard of it going both ways. People can smoke for a lifetime and never get cancer, while others never smoke and die early on.

i have people in my family die from cancer.
breast cancer and others.
therefore, i do NOT feel sorry for people who smoke cigs their entire life and die from lung cancer.

i quit cold turkey in 1997 when my grandmother died from cancer.
Then you are still at a much greater chance of developing lung cancer than the average person. I doubt Peter Jennings cancer was caused by his brief relapse less than 4 years ago...
