I am doing a little research for a friend of mine that wants to write a self-help book for chicks that date/marry guys with Harleys. The reason this is limited to Harley owners is that the phenomena we are going to discuss is for sure a Harley thing, and we don't know that it is applicable to owners of rice grinders or other crotch rockets. So, don't take it personal. If it is something that happens with rice also, please feel free to add your observations.

The phenomena is this: Chicks get envious of their husbands/boyfriends/both Harleys. It is inevitable.

Scenario 1. Guy has a Harley, meets a chick. She thinks it is great, and always wants to go riding with him. After she is in the relationship a while, she starts feeling that the guy pays more attention to the bike, than to her. She gets mad, relationship dissolves.

Scenario 2. Guy and gal are a couple. Guy gets a Harley, chick loves it at first, then eventually she starts feeling that the guy pays more attention to the bike, than to her. She gets mad, relationship dissolves.

There are certain truths that will be brought out, like, yeah, we are paying more attention to the bike than her. But why is that? Why are we willing to spend hours primping the bike, and willing to spend $1,000's on fixing her up, that probably could have been spent on the chick, but we opted for the former.

Yes, I know there are exceptions to every rule, so no need to chime in with "my g/f and I have been together for 6 weeks and she loves my bike, and I love her." Yeah, yeah, that isn't why I am conducting this survey.

women dislike chick magnets. once you catch them they want you to dump it and make them the center of your life. its true with most things, but nearly always with harleys. also, if they really aren't into bikes and the upkeep, attempts to include them will seem like work and wont last long. best bet, find someone to ride along side with rather then someone who's along for the ride.

I have been in the biker lifestyle since i can remember, my mom has rode for years and she sold me her bike a few years back (77 Wideglide) She has and still is a active member of the biker community and knows everyone in the clubs here in NJ/NY area. I always have this happen to me, someone comes up to me and says I know your mom its a bit freaky but its cool. I got my first harley at 16 and still have it to this day,and have bought a few more since that one.I have rode to sturgis from NJ twice, and plan on doing it with my buddies next year again via Canada.

That said, i have a few rules when i date,

#1 is never ever question my Harleys or my business. They have and will be a part of me till im in the ground.

#2 see rule #1.

I have put alot of miles on my bikes and i will only date a girl who likes them and will ride with me. Ive been with my current g/f for over 5 years and we still put alot of miles on the bikes, she bugs me to ride all the time. I guess im on of the few lucky ones. BFFB

My last Harley was a '95 Springer. I'm currently piloting an '04 Softtail Standard, FXI. You're right on target. Even my wife tells everyone, "He loves the Harley more than me."

The problem comes from when we want to ride "solo." Gals just don't understand that the machine handles much, much differently without a splittail on the bob. Cornering, all-out accel, everything is just "different." We like changing out riding situations and, sometimes that means "she" doesn't get to go. That is what enrages mine. It's not about what we WANT to do, but more, what they THINK we ARE doing.

I've had a viberider in my pass pad now for over a year and I've never told my wife it's there. She'd never understand the humor of the install.

Why do we put so much effort and love into our bikes? Because it's the same relationship I experienced in Nam with my buds. It's a "life/death" relationship where everything's "on the line" and passengers just don't understand that like we do.

Now, I've gotta roll "her" out and give her a good washing!

trick is, to find a chick who's dad owned a Harley - they are used to it. ;) I like that fact about my girl.

chicks can get jealous over anything.

you talk about Harleys, chicks get jealous over guitars too.

My wife has her own bike, and she loves it when I put some new chrome on it. Put new chrome wheels on it last night, she was real happy when she saw it this morning.

might be some truth in orginal poster's hypothesis.

i have been a sportbike rider for 35 years and i'm aware of the sportbike vs harley rider dichotomy. two different worlds.

it seems to me that the harley group is more into a social "male bonding" thing to the exclusion of women. oh sure you will find some snaggle-tooth skank in a halter top behind one of the beer belly guys once in a while, but mostly it's an all-male "bad guy" club. after a while i think most girls don't dig this so much. and some of these harley guys are so inept with their machines it might scare the girls. i mean after all, it's one thing if YOU don't want to wear your helmet---but why insist that your passenger doesn't wear a helmet also? in the USA motorcycle fatalities are on the rise---and the biggest % of fatalities are in no-helmet states. speedy evolution.

and i think most sportbike riders are into the physics and function of pure performance, more like it is an athletic thing, and the sportbikers are mostly loners---they ride their bikes, get the testosterone rush, and run home to bang their women.

of course this is just armchair thinking, and may have no validity---but i have ridden and watched a long time, and not much has changed in 35 years.

As stated above, my friend wants to write a self help book for chicks to help them avoid the scenarios I described.

So far I am getting the idea that there are three solutions. 1) Get a hobby. 2) Get your own bike. 3) Deal with it.

Am I missing something?

Be advised I have my own ideas, but this is going to be her book, not mine, so input from multiple sources is desired.
