yes, the start page does give them money

but

You see that little Google search box on the upper right? If you use that box to make a search and click on one of the Google ads from the results page, Firefox gets an estimated 80% of the money. In addition to the search box, Mozilla also makes money from searches made on the Firefox start page .

No shit, how many times has it been pointed out already and people still say "Yeah, its the home page." Fuck, I have used that damn search bar 1000s of times. And I'm just one user. Thats a pretty good little stunt, I do have to admit.

Google is, in a business sense, total fucking idiots for paying for that particular traffic. Not paying for it wouldn't greatly reduce the number of searches that google gets, and they have plenty of thier own toolbars installed on firefox browsers (I have one, example).

Most importantly, I don't think they would lose 80% of the firefox user searches... so they are over paying for what they would have gotten anyway.

Good on firefox, but if you are buying adwords, now you have another indication that Google is using some of the most expensive traffic aquisition methods around.

What does google care how much traffic costs if it has a line of buyers willing to pay more?

How does buying something and selling it for more make them idiots?
More clicks = More $ and we have no idea what the relationship is with them also paying out on firefox downloads with the google tool bar installed
