I don't see the problem in arresting a girl who nailed a boy in the head with a rock.

In my town they started arresting kids who got into even small fights at school.

I see a difference, but not so much as to make it altogether unlike given the situation.

You claim terrorist attacks made people vote out of fear, ie: "Allah decided your election" or whatever your trite little soundbyte was. I'm claiming that terrorist attacks made people in the US vote out of fear as well. Or perhaps you missed the new voter category of "Security Moms" the bush campaign came up with this pass around.

Personally, as someone who was somewhat following the spanish elections, it appeared like it was going to be very close even before the attacks, with the challenger party having all the momentum and the incumbant on his heels due to recent casualties of spanish forces in Iraq. I'm sure inhabitants of spain could give more insight than I into the atmosphere leading up to the election. If anything, the incumbents transparent attempt to use the situation for crass political gain was more influental than the attack.

Ultimately, if you're going to cast aspersions, at least be intellectually honest about it. Unless you can honestly claim that fear of terrorists played absolutely no part whatsoever in any electoral outcome in the US election (which we both know you can't), of course. Can you make that claim?

I think there's a marked difference. Let me explain why

In the case of Spain, it was widely assumed the goverment would retain power. The goverment supported the war in Iraq and the opposition did not. A an actual terrorist attack right before the election sways the populace just enough and gets the oppisition in to power. Spanish troops withdraw from Iraq shortly after. From a millitant Islamic point of view, this represents a win in the end result.

In the case of the United States, the Bush/Cheney regime were able to scare some of the population in to voting with threats of real or imagined terrorist events to come. Bush/Cheney are re-elected and continue their war in Iraq. From a millitant Islamic point of view, not the ideal result.

A little background on that story.

A group (some describe it as a gang, although affiliation appears to be loose) of young filipino males (YFMs) were playing basketball, and were assaulted by another group/gang of young male whites (YWMs). The extent of the assault is not clear (some blood was spilled), but by what accounts I've found the filipino group, which was smaller, were at the very least deprived of property and chased.

The same YFM group/gang, with additional members (including the boy who ended up getting shot) later engaged the YWM group/gang in a public arena. The YWMs, this time being outnumbered, decided to book it instead of getting back what they dished out earlier. The filipinos gave chase. One of the YWMs called Toronto Metro police by cel, which had an unmarked unit with 2 plainclothes officers in the area.

The officers stopped the YFMs at gunpoint, including the victim. Accounts differ, but many say the officers never identified themselves. The YFMs, thinking that these two (white) officers were an extention of the white gang, were natually not very cooperative. In the following moments, the victim, Jeffrey Reodica was shot three times (possibly while in a kneeling position or standing up from same) and died in hospital 3 days later.

In the ensuing police investigation, the shooting officer (Ofc. Dan Belanger) claimed he was being threatened with a knife and that he felt as though he had been stabbed in the leg, although there was no physical evidence to back up his claim. The results of the coroner's autopsy were not released publicly, that I can find.

Now, contrast the scenario of two young adult male groups, in a racially charged atmosphere on public streets, beating and chasing each other around vs. a single 11 year old girl on her own property defending herself with whatever tools she had on hand against multiple older male antagonists with whom she'd already been had dealings.

Short form: Gang War vs. Self Defence against multiple assailants.

Additionally, not only this this even make news, it was national news for well over a week. Police rarely have to use their sidearms in the line of duty up here. For example, in 1999 firearms killed 1006 people in Canada: 80 per cent were categorized as suicides, 15 per cent as homicides, 3.7 per cent were accidental, and less than one per cent each were listed as undetermined, or the result of law enforcement intervention. Less than 10 deaths per year by officers in the line of duty, in a country of 32+ million.

It's disingenuous to claim that Canada's police actions are by any scale comparable to that produced by the increasingly hostile public vs. police antagonism south of the border. Yes, cops will overreact, innocent people with have rights trampled, it's not perfect... but the scale and attitudes are so radically different that you might as well be comparing baseball to waterskiing.

The problem with the tresspassing idea, is that in most states, the boys would have had to have been warned in writing by a police officer and the owner of the property.

As for Assault with a deadly weapon, this sounds a bit fucked up to me, as she did not assault him, she battered him. It should have been battery with a deadly weapon. Assault means to threaten.

There are procedures to handcuffing someone, and if that person makes any move that may be deemed violent, then they would have put her on the ground, and used resaonable force to handcuff her, and that would include kneeling on her.

Do I agree with this. HELLL FUCKKK NOOO!!!

Or comparing two countries of similiar land mass but with a population of ~32 Million and the other ~296 Million. What was that you were saying about scale?

It would be silly to compare baseball to waterskiing. It's almost as foolish as comparing two countries that are geographically similar in size but differ in population density by a factor of 9 almost 10 times.

What was that you were saying about scale again?

Not sure where you got that idea.

                                            Here's what assault really is:

Assault - An unlawful physical attack or threat of attack. Assaults may be classified as aggravated or simple. Rape, attempted rape, and sexual assaults are excluded from this category, as well as robbery and attempted robbery. The severity of assaults ranges from minor threat to incidents which are nearly fatal.

A an actual terrorist attack right before the election sways the populace just enough and gets the oppisition in to power. Spanish troops withdraw from Iraq shortly after. From a millitant Islamic point of view, this represents a win in the end result.
The sources I was reading (CBC, BBC and Global) did not have the incumbent staying in power. It was by all accounts a close race, with the challengers riding high for reasons as I had mentioned.

There is absolutely no doubt that islamic militants view it as a win, though, that much is certain. Sadly, appearances and reality often bear little relation, and appearances are all to often relied on as fact.

In the case of the United States, the Bush/Cheney regime were able to scare some of the population in to voting with threats of real or imagined terrorist events to come. Bush/Cheney are re-elected and continue their war in Iraq. From a millitant Islamic point of view, not the ideal result.
Depends on how you look at it. If I were bin Laden, I'd be damn near jizzing myself over how the US mishandling of iraq is making pan-arabic unification a larger and larger possibility.

In what used to be considered some of his most shrill propoganda, bin Laden claimed (among other things) that the US tortures and rapes prisoners, including women and children (the same is claimed about Israel, coincidentally... often the 'crimes' of the one are shared by the other as if israel and the us were essentially a single entity). Imagine the spur in recruitment when it was revealed that, perhaps, it wasn't so much propoganda as accurate reporting (Abu Ghraib, Gitmo, Bagram et al).

Now, some people might immediately jump in here and say it was just some 'bad apples' and 'localized incidents' and so forth. In such wet-work the truth will probably never be fully revealed, although the bush administrations' refusals to release the full set of pictures/videos are very suggestive of there being thing far worse than what they admitted to. Add in the revelations of 'extraordinary rendition', the gonzales memo advising on the legality of torture, and the US develops a serious image problem... rightly or wrongly, and even amongst people in western nations, that the US endorses and routinely uses torture of civilians as a tool of state.

That perception not only serves as a marvellous recruitment tool for 'al Qaeda' (which now seems more a catch-all phrase translated as 'brown people we don't like'), but serves to radicalize the general population of many otherwise mainstream islamics. A recent CSIS report on the division of forces in the iraq insurgency states that, of the small portion of external forces entering iraq, the majority of them are recently radicalized individuals that had never engaged before in any sort of military or paramilitary venture. We're talking shopkeepers and auto mechanic types.

Anyways, back to topic... I suppose if you look at the original assertion you made, based on public perception, it's not a dishonest one to take even if factually the attacks themselves had little overall effect. So I guess we've both got a legitimate stand, we were just comparing two different (but related) things.

Yes, cops will overreact, innocent people with have rights trampled, it's not perfect... but the scale and attitudes are so radically different that you might as well be comparing baseball to waterskiing.
rick, you completely missed the point.
the point is that you have a group of misguided canadians on this board who use every bit of bad news about the US to explain how bad it is, how stupid we are, etc. etc.
my point was that no one here gives a fuck about what goes on in canada but bad things happen there too.

oh, and I'm not sure what the point of your story was. was it to explain that the cop was right in shooting an unarmed child in the back or that handcuffing a little girl is worse than killing someone a little older?

                                                          Here's what assault really is:

Assault - An unlawful physical attack or threat of attack. Assaults may be classified as aggravated or simple. Rape, attempted rape, and sexual assaults are excluded from this category, as well as robbery and attempted robbery. The severity of assaults ranges from minor threat to incidents which are nearly fatal.

I dont really know cali law that well, I have not been on this coast that long. But in most other states, assault, is the threat, and battery is the actual action. In this case I may be wrong. I know that some things change from state to state.

It would be silly to compare baseball to waterskiing. It's almost as foolish as comparing two countries that are geographically similar in size but differ in population density by a factor of 9 almost 10 times.

What was that you were saying about scale again?
Population density across the entire country may be 9/10 times that of canada, but population density in major urban centers between the two countries is more or less uniform, and the most correct way to measure these statistics is in incidents per capita.

In a nutshell, Canada has roughly 10 law enforcement related fatalities per 32,000,000+ people.

The US, according to the only numbers I could find (a highly partisan pro-gun website... if there's any official statistics, I'd love to see em), has roughly 300 enforcement related fatalities per 298,000,000+ people.

.3 per million versus just over 1 per million. A three-to-one (and then some) ratio.

Of course it's understandable, given the increasingly paramilitary role of police in the us, and the fact that gun-related homocides there are astronomical (roughly 12000 in 1998, for (40 per million vs. 4.7 per million in canada). I'm not surprised that police there are more... ahm... "anxious". That point isn't in contention.

The whole point those was to show that it's disingenuous to compare US and Canadian police forces and claim that they're equally supressive.

If these people are that easily radicalized, they should be killed (which they are)
Define "easily radicalized". If china invaded new zealand and killed your wife and kids while they were visiting Aunt Maybel, would you pick up a gun and join the fight? How likely would you try to take some action if your country wouldn't do so, because it was aligned with the chinese and so it wouldn't send any military in, like perhaps jordanians, saudis or pakistanis may currently feel?

These people are coming with little to no experience and not part of any organized group. They are average schmoes packing up, grabbing an AK and marching off to help join the struggle for whatever reasons they hold dear. That doesn't change the fact that these are previously non-militants joining in a war in what is ostensibly a foreign country. People don't start marching independantly without being radicalized, and thousands upon thousands of civilian dead, combined with well publicized abuses of prisoners go a long way to getting the average akhmed start listening to those fatwas he only glossed over before.

Here's the link to the Center for Strategic and Intermational Services report that I mentioned. Perhaps you'll have some luck claiming that CSIS is a pack of 'liberal bush haters'.

You may be right. I don't keep track of what other people post... usually when I chime in, it's because I see facts being abused in an egregious manner and I'm compelled to lay down some reality.

Frankly, I don't care what someone's opinion is as long as it's intellectually honest and not just some pathetic attempt to gloss over personal hatreds with a thin veneer of half-baked pseudologic. I have nothing but disdain for that sort of tripe, and the disdain I have grows proportionally with the level of dishonesty displayed. I may not agree with your opinion in the end, but if you can support it rationally I will accept it (as I did with War's 'allah won an election' once he defined that he was talking about it being viewed in terms of public perception).

my point was that no one here gives a fuck about what goes on in canada but bad things happen there too.
If that is the point, then yes, bad things happen. It's life, sadly. Your original post though made it appear as though you were equating the two systems which is obviously and demonstrably wrong.

oh, and I'm not sure what the point of your story was. was it to explain that the cop was right in shooting an unarmed child in the back or that handcuffing a little girl is worse than killing someone a little older?
No, the point was a) to make sure people are getting something approximating full disclosure and b) to demonstrate the circumstances. If these cops are in the middle of what basically amounts to a low-intensity gang fracas, they're going to be more on edge and more likely to produce and use thier sidearms. You were equating the dubious actions of a cop in the middle of a heated gang conflict versus that of multiple cops against one small 11 year old girl who threw a rock at boys who were tormenting her. Like I said before, baseball and waterskis.

you see, when you actually look at the facts, not the opinions you like to call facts, you'll see that islamic fundamentalists go from reason to reason to kill people. You clowns that think you can reason with them would be found dead still clutching your white flag.
