One-Third of U.S. Troops From Iraq Have Mental Problems

more snippers in the making ....

A new Pentagon survey finds that 30 percent of U.S. troops returning from Iraq developed mental health problems within three or four months of coming home, the Army's surgeon general said Thursday.

The mental disorders include anxiety, depression, nightmares, anger, and an inability to concentrate, the Associated Press reported. A smaller group has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), characterized by more severe forms of many of these same symptoms.

Earlier surveys have found 3 percent to 5 percent of Iraq veterans were diagnosed with a significant mental health issue immediately after they left the war zone, the AP reported. The Army only now has begun evaluating veterans three to six months after they leave combat.

Only about 5 percent of troops returning from combat actually have PTSD, though significantly more have problems adjusting, an Army spokesman told the wire service.

What the article fail to mention is that 2/3 had mental problems before going to Iraq.. So 1/3 was actually cured by the trip

100% of all Americans that supported the invasion of Iraq have a mental condition also. It's call "STUPIDITY".
            Good luck.

The anger they are talking about is a level that comes close or includes blackouts from pure rage. They put you under the category of personality disorders.

I can understand this, it took me about 6 years before my mind become my own again. Think about it like this, being paranoid without being high. Angry with no reason. Your body and mind go from being pushed, programmed, told what to do, when to shit, when to eat, to complete freedom. When you go into boot camp pretty much everyone breaks down from the new life style, stress, etc.. The same thing happens when you get out but not in a controlled environment.

                  Wow awesome Statistic.

How about this one: 1 in 5 Canadians will experience living with a mental illness serious enough to impair functioning.

That's 20% of all Canadians, not just those who have been in a combat zone. Amazing, no?

Everyone who was on war should have some kind of mental problem because war is not an entertainment... The same we have here in Russia. I have a buddy has returned from Chechnya. Actually I knew him form school times. And I can admit he has changed a lot. He was I machine gun operator, and he has killed many people there. Course all of them were not civilians. They were TERRORISTS. But(!) it's always hard to kill someone even if he is a bad guy. And it's also hard to see your friend dieing on your eyes... The girlfriend of my buddy told me he still has nightmares, and screams when he is slipping. Actually it's not a matter of fun

                            Mental Disorders in America

Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 22.1 percent of Americans ages 18 and older?about 1 in 5 adults?suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.1 When applied to the 1998 U.S. Census residential population estimate, this figure translates to 44.3 million

If 1/3 of the troops returning from Iraq develop mental disorders, the logical solution is to only bring home 2/3 of the troops. The remaining 1/3 will then NOT return to the U.S. and show signs of mental disorders.

that's why mental health of soldiers must be given so much importance and monitoring given the amount of stress they are exposed to.

Is it really 1/3. I thought the exact number was 3/4, and that includes the Commander in Chief.
