Need Trip Advice: Taking Trip To Eastern Canada

So my wife and I want to take a trip out to the east coast at the end of August. Here is our basic idea..

Fly out to Montreal and visit our partners from Submit Passes, do some shopping, have a couple of nice dinners and stay at the W in Montreal.

We're planning on renting a convertible and driving to Quebec City and staying overnight and seeing some sites. Maybe someone could recommend a good place to stay and a few places to see while we are there?

Next stop east coast, we're planning on driving from Quebec City and were wondering what places we should stop off and see on the way to the east coast? We're giving ourselves like 5 days to go and explore and then fly back from St John NB.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Make sure you get a rental car with unlimited miles if you plan on driving all the way East with it

We're going to leave it to Avis on the east coast so we don't have to drive it back obviously

Hehe I am very familiar with that street... I am notorious in Montreal for my stage abilities, ask anyone who attended the Montreal show can verify that LOL!

It's a shame you don't have much time. Depending on what it is your after, NB/NS/PEI can offer you pretty much any of it. If you wanted to hit the major sights, you'll probably want to do the confederation bridge and hang out a bit on PEI... if you're feeling adventurous and want to see some of the most beautiful land/seascapes on the planet take a drive up to cape breton and do the Cabot and Caleidh trails which would probably take you a day or two if you wanted to really dig in.

If you're into period stuff, the fortress of louisberg has been recreated to historical accuracy and offers a little slice of what life was like in the late 1700s. Pretty cool with the muskeeters marching around and whatnot.

Another nice drive is the 'lighthouse trail', on the atlantic side of nova scotia... stop in at lunenberg and see the tall ships perhaps. See the memorial for the victims of the plane crash off Peggy's Cove, or find out about aliens at Shag Harbour

If you're lucky, fall will come a tad early and colours in the high altitudes will start to come out. The best time to do the cape breton run without a doubt is early fall when everything starts to turn. Amazing pallette of tree canopies set against rugged cliffs and big seas, it's really something to behold.

5 Days really isn't enough to see a bunch. Come for a couple weeks and you can probably do a whirlwind tour.

I live on the East Coast...

Moncton, NB Has a pretty nice mall... I believe it's the largest 1 story mall in the world.

Shediac, NB is good... it's about 15 minutes from Moncton. It's the self-proclaimed lobster capitol of the world. Good lobster to eat.

From there you can get to PEI which is absolutely beautiful in the summer. The whole island is made of very red clay.

Hopewell Rocks, NB this is about a 45 Minute Drive from moncton.

here is a link to check out... there is much more... Paies de Sagouin

PEI is definitely the best place to spend your time... be sure to check out Malpaque Bay, Cavendish Beach and yeah, Fisherman's Wharf in North Rustico is pretty good. Do some deep sea fishing there and then go into the restraunt for dinner. You'll love it.

I lived in PEI for 10 years off and on... some beauty places there and this time of year it's probably the most beautiful place in Canada.

Since you will be in quebec city you should continue and go to the casino in charlevoix. Then head up to Tadoussac where you can bring your girl on a boat cruise to see the whales...There are a lot of 'em Ive been last year. Then you should continue up to Baie-comeau where you take a ferry to the other site of the st-lawrence river and it arrives in Matane gaspesie wich is also beautiful.

PEI is a must stop. If you're a golfer you have to hit Crowbush and Brudenell. If you had more time Savage Harbour is one of the most relaxing places to stay and rent a cottage.

Dinner or lunch down at the Fisherman's Wharf is also a must. Freshest seafood you'll ever get. Fish and chips are one of my favorite's there.

There is also a very nice Pub style restaurant in Charlottetown right on the water. Forget the name of it but it is upstairs and has a great terrace and live bands on the weekends.

And if you go, take the bridge and not the ferry. Well worth it.

I doubt you'd want to make it out this far, but if you do come all the way to Nova Scotia... I think it's worth the extra day out to Cape Breton, very beautiful and relaxing. I just went 3 weeks ago and had a great time (and some great seafood)... The french locals were very friendly.

The only place worth staying in Quebec City is the Chateau Frontenac (preferrably on the 14th floor with a river view).

If you like historical cuisine, try Aux Anciens Canadien on rue St. Louis (about a block from the Frontenac).

It's about 10 mins drive from baturst . You can go on the docks fishing every night and you'll catch at least couple nice fishs . Deep see fishing arround there is awesome too and not too expensive ...

Heh, I'm actually on my way home from a 5 day trip of the East Coast (currently in a Motel in Woodstock)... Got all the way down to Cape Breton, but, honestly don't think it's worth the drive UNLESS you have the time.. Fortress of Louisberg is king of neat, but, it's honestly a 5 hour drive from the middle of Nova Scotia, just to spend a few hours at a 1744 fortress (albeit the largest fortress in North America at the time).... I definately enjoyed it, and I loved the drive from Sydney up the Amherst, but limited time, I wouldn't bother going that far...

See the memorial for the victims of the plane crash off Peggy's Cove, or find out about aliens at Shag Harbour

5 Days really isn't enough to see a bunch. Come for a couple weeks and you can probably do a whirlwind tour.
The highlight of my trip was definately the drive down to Peggy's Cove - especially the little lakes down around that area... 5 days is definately a short time.... But, it can be done... You don't need to spend more than a day or to in PEI, and New Brunswick is okay... But the Nova Scotia landscape is really amazing.. That being said, the flowerpot (hopewell) rocks in New Brunswick, and the Bay of Fundy + small towns in New Brunswick are must-sees as well...
Maybe go whale-watching if you have the time....

Definately a nice trip though, but I wish I had time to see Newfoundland..
