this is the letter i had to fax to
american airlines since they don't accept calls or emails if the reservation was on one of their "alliance" carriers... even when the bag was in their possession at the time of the theft. if you are carrying any electronic items of value,
DO NOT PUT THEM IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. they can and do steal electronic equipment and you have no recourse... NONE. just a helpful warning to other webmasters who travel internationally.... after cashing in my miles, i'll be changing the airlines i use

i arrived into LAX from HKK with both bags intact and with all my possessions in them. i checked inside my bag before re-checking them to insure my camera (Canon 1D), EX-Sigma 35mm Lens, and 3 batteries (for my canon video camera) were still intact. they were, and i gave the bags to your security people therafter. i had an 8-hour layover (i arrived at 10am, my flight to FLL didn't leave until 9pm). i left both bags in your care until i returned, took the flight to FLL and picked the bags up at baggage claim. i then went home and started to unpack my luggage and relaized the aforementioned items were missing from my bag. i called your "missing contents" department and they subsequently informed me that american airlines people can steal my property and i have no recourse if the equipment is "electronic". the person i talked to was very aloof, uncaring and basically told me "tough luck, make a complaint". the equipment someone in your organization stole is worth in excess of $5,000US. i had no insurance unfortunately but i am a frequent flyer (asia miles) and never had problems like this before. i would like my equipment replaced. find who did it, give it back or you can cover the cost of re-purchasing this crucial equipment. i trusted you and this is how you do loyal customers?
