You can look cool, be accepted by your peers when you are young, etc, etc. Seriously I know plenty of people who run everyday, play soccer, squash, rugby, swim, etc and smoke a lot and they have suffered no ill effects. Obviously it will not improve your performance but sometimes I think the detrimental effects are over done a bit.
Also people who smoke generally enjoy it, for whatever reason.
I Used to smoke about 25/30 a day, now I smoke when I go boozing, but that's not so often any more....
