Police identify man they shot dead at subway

London police identified the man they shot dead Friday at a subway station as Jean Charles de Menezes, a 27-year-old Brazilian national.

Earlier, police said the man "was not connected" with the attempted bombings on Thursday, but added "Brazilian, Arab they all look the same to us. Were we suppose to wait until after he bombed a train?"

"As he sort of went down, two of them sort of dropped on to him to hold him down, and the other one fired. I heard five shots.

I don't know the full circumstances, but the story seems to be that the man was shot 5 times after they got him to the ground ... this has "excessive force" accusations written all over it.

But so far, no one seems to be protesting. If this was America and the suspect was ... aww, never mind.

i think we need questions answered on a variety of fronts. We need to know the nature of the house that was under watch. was it split up into flats and he lived in a flat there and they got the wrong man? Were they watching the wrong house all together?

then we need to know about the nature of the chase. If a group of men in normal clothing pulled guns on me I might run too. Not to mention Stockwell isn't the best area of London (read: dodgy as fuck) and does have gun crime. We need to know at what stage they identified themselves and how. Keep in mind whe this guy comes from and that areas relationship with police violence could also have scared him.

I donot think London police are idiots but in order for the mass public to continue thinking that too we need to have things explained to us. We especially need answers now on the number of shots fired.

Also, this heavy coat theory works now but most of us here know London is a heavy coat city most months of the year.

Sure its sad - and tragic for the guys family. But look at the cicumstance ... What were they to do - he was running , he ignored or did not understand the order to stop. These things are going to happen, its a fact. What if he had been holding a bomb and the Police did not shoot. Its a no win situation all round for everyone. They have to go hard for the bastards that are doing this shit - innocent people have already and will continue to die ... fact ... get used to it.

bullets in the head actually...as they are now not aiming for the torso incase they set off bombs. I'm not going to pretend to know the whole story here since I don't think any of the public do but if he jumped barriers next to armed guards that does indeed put him in a different league than someone simply running not to miss a train. Not the least because you can't tell from the barriers at that station what trains are in and it is indeed a long journey to the platform. I am slightly more suprised that the uniformed officers at the station didn't chase him too after that.

I dont think any other cops that I can think of would jump on top of a guy they thing has a bomb under his jacket - they'd take him out from afar - two guys kneeling on the guy while the third pumps 5 rounds into him is not a "normal" police reaction to a bomb

You can go to any of the UKs newspaper websites and read the eyewitness accounts to see exactly what happened
