New Tool To Fight HIV: Circumcision

Very interesting study:

Circumcising adult men is an effective way to limit transmission of the virus that causes AIDS. The National Institutes of Health announced today that two clinical trials in Africa have been stopped because an independent monitoring board determined the treatment was so effective that it would be unethical to continue the experiment.

"We now have confirmation ? from large, carefully controlled, randomized clinical trials ?showing definitively that medically performed circumcision can significantly lower the risk of adult males contracting HIV through heterosexual intercourse,"

You gotta wonder about that. The areas with the highest HIV problems are Africa, India and China. If your statement is correct, then men from these regions like to take it up the stinkhole, or they are all needle drug users..doesnt sound too likely does it..

On the other hand, I heard on NPR from a reputable source that a nurse who poke herself with a needle (by mistake) used for blood transfusion from an HIV patient, have less than a 5% probability of getting the virus...

causes for the proliferation of AIDS in some African shithole and San Francisco are two totally different things. of course AIDS can be spread by heterosexual sex... but thats not hardly the primary cause in the US is it?

The issue is condoms. In the west we use them (though not always, sadly). One day, what I'd like to see, alonside those planes dropping aid and the UN trucks spilling grain around for these poor people, is some kind of organised campaign to deliver tonnes and tonnes of condoms to these regions. They know how to use them. They WOULD use them. It would not only help stop these deadly viruses, but might help cut down on birthrate and thus famine.

I don't see any problem with this theory, but by golly I'm sure BoyAlley can find some.

The difference is education, access to preventative measures (condoms), and decent access to medical care post-diagnosis (drug cocktails that lessen the risk of transfer between sex partners and from mother to child, as well as lengthening the life span of the infected parties).

i think we are looking at it from much different angles.
i understand that in USA the majority of HIV infections happen thru drug use and male/male unprotected sex. but that doesnt mean this is the only way the disease is tranferred (in USA or 3rd world countries).

Article didn't state much but the studies I've on it before state that uncircumcised men are at a greater risk for tiny lacerations around the forskin.

Great article, and every little bit helps BUT there?s absolutely no correlation between having unprotected sex as a circumcised man and NOT getting HIV. What the research tells us is that if you?re going to have unprotected sex, the chances of contracting HIV are LESS if you are circumcised, not non existent. Still got a 50% chance there. But in Africa, every little bit to reduce the chances helps!!
