Iraq becoming much worse

Yesterday, a group of paramilitary Iraq police stormed Baghdad's primary emergency room to harrass and abuse patients and doctors. After a several tussles, the doctors decided enough and streamed out of the hospital to stage an impromtu strike.

Sad, isn't it?

Now for the rest of the story... the striking doctors went to a local police station to remind the cops that most of the injured Iraq police and soldiers are treated at their hospital and if they would like to continue to be treated that they better stop raiding the hospital!

In 1990, the Peruvian government shifted its focus... 5 years later Sendero was essentially put down.

Sendero Luminoso is/was one of the most radical violent dogmas of the 20th century. Most of their leaders were trained by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Sendero Luminoso primary doctrine (Radical Maoist) was to achieve power by literally destroying any modern technology and imposing a new world.

There will always be terrorism based on some sort of extreme ideology but we shouldn't help the terrorists by randomly attacking the issue as we are in Iraq. The U.S. army doesn't have a clue to what it is doing or is impeded by a politically motivated White House that can't admit to erred.

FARC is different because they are an army and a government in power.

Bear with me.

FARC controls large portions of Colombia where they are the government. FARC is a revolution that hasn't been totally successful but that hasn't been defeated either. I know, no help. The issue of actually controlling a large population and territory gives FARC an air of political legitimacy which a terrorist group doesn't have. This is the main difference between a terrorist and a revolutionary.

Interesting stats from the National Counterterrorism Center [other docs available]:

Iraq 2002: 14 "significant" terrorist events
Iraq Jan-Jun 2005: 883 "significant" terrorist events

Almost 70% of the events recorded by the NCC in the first half of this year took place in Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and Israel. In 2004, the Indian sub-continent, Columbia, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia accounted for most of the rest, although 20-some other countries each suffered 1-2 attacks. Outside Israel/Palestine and Aghanistan/Iraq, almost every attack was the responsibility of domestic groups having long-standing quarrels with their governments going back many years.

And apart from in Columbia and the Philippines, where the US has been providing assistance since long before anyone thought about a "War on Terror", the US isn't involved.
