There are two types of religious people. Those who "give it up to God" in everything they do, and those who try to take control themselves and then accept the outcome whatever it may be.
The first one is usually the evangelical. Not all Christians are evangelical though. In fact the "regular" ones sometimes think the evangelicals are a bit nutty.
A family friend of ours recently inherited about $50,000. To make a long story short she was scammed out of $30,000 of it that she thought she was investing. They guy took the money and ran. Her response was "If God didn't want me to have that money, then why was it left to me?" I can't say for sure, but there is a pretty good chance that she was thinking that when she decided to invest it and thus had all the confidence in the world in this guy.
It's not that the super devoted religious people are stupid. It just seems to me that through religion they sometimes don't see danger or see too much danger in other things.
