The PLA is a political force that is meant to support the Party. 99% of what they do is keep people from spitting gum at Tian an Men or keep the peasants in line. Currently there is a huge problem with the division of rich and poor in China and some areas are not really in government control any longer. Except for a few specialist units the PLA is a police force.

To sum it up China is not yet capable of projecting military power and there is no credible threat to Taiwan now. In time yes, but not for many years. We have had a defense treaty with Taiwan since Taiwan was called Formosa. Doubtful. Just like with the USSR... The Cold War was largely a hoax. The average hillbilly in Kentucky was better equipped to fight a war than the average Soviet Soldier. If China made a move on Taiwan, I doubt America would use military force against China. America can't afford the consequences.
I think there would be a lot of talk and political rhetoric, maybe America would give Taiwan some weapons to help it fight off China, but I don't see America getting militarily involved, the consequences are just too great.
I think whether America would ultimately "win" in the end is irrelevant. I don't think the average American is willing to suffer the consequences of such a war just to ensure Taiwan's independence.I post on GFY so that when people ask me what I do,

The US does not have anything to lose from N Korea.. its a regional issue, not a global issue. That is why China, Russia, Japan and Korea have been taking the lead roles in dealing with them. N Korea does not have missiles that can even reach the US and the local governments have more influence over N Korea and stronger ties - and N Korea wants the US to participate only to continue blackmailing the US into feeding them and sending them oil. The US is trying to stay out of it so that they cannot continue their blackmail scam. Even without U.S. help, its possible Taiwan would emerge victorious IF they had the will to fight, which is somewhat doubtful.
