    What is war?

Last night my daughter, who just turned 5, saw a sign that said something about the war while we were driving home, so she asked me "What is war?". I never lie to my kids and I try to never evade a question when they are really looking for information, but that was a really hard question. During the conversation that followed she asked a LOT of really hard questions. She had a very hard time believing that large groups of people try to kill each other in real life, she thought that it had to be pretend. It really broke my heart. She wanted to know if kids die in wars too, she couldn't understand why kids should die when grown ups wanted to kill each other.

How would you explain to a child what a war is?

Just tell her it's only bad guys who start it, and the good guys always win.

    She'll be fine...

War is in our nature. There has been war in every civilization, ideology and culture since the begining of mankind. War has less to do with any political party and more to do with the human condition. It has always been with us and always will be. Sadly, the only thing that changes are the weapons we use...

It's at this point that a child's innocence starts to diminish and understand what humanity is all about. Gotta tell her someday
