Why don't sponsors chase up uncashed checks?

I know there's an obvious answer, but I think it's time for a sponsor (or third party biller) to step up and say that they will actively hunt for checks which have not been cashed within a reasonable period of time.

I found a couple of checks from April that haven't been cashed, worth a total of about $700. If I hadn't come across them then that value would have remained a figure written on some paper.

When enquiring about the process for reissuing checks one of the replies from a popular third party biller completely ignored my question about why they didn't actively monitor for unclaimed funds.

wait a minute . .. . it is our responsibility to make sure you get paid on time, and now it is our responsibility to make sure you cash them?

Simple answer, the checks expiire for the most part. Didn't cash it? Your problem. That would be a nightmare tracking hundreds if not thousands of outstanding checks.

the check is still good. People print void after 90 days but that is false. A check is good forever.

They probably thought it must have been a joke.

Is it really that much work to run a program to audit drawn checks against mailouts once a month?

Yes, in this case it was my fault, but what if it had been lost in the mail? Some programs don't even have a basic payouts page, so unless you receive a regular check from them you won't even know the check has been lost.

It is a nice idea but people like me would drive a program insane. I let my checks build up at times for months.

I also know many people who just never cash them due to their location and the check amount.

I lost a $35 check once cause i accidentally threw it in the trash....It was a small check but would you throw a 20 a 10 and a 5 and just throw it in the garbage?......

It's MY fault...I'm not gonna cry to the sponsor because of my own stupidity...

thats why most of the checks have a 30 60 90 or 120 day expiration, i've never had a problem getting a check re-issued by a sponsor if i "forgot" to cash the check or lost the check

once the check is in your hands it's your responsibility to cash it...

Depends, I had to contact ccbill one time after an act of stupidity of my own. I was shredding papers off my desk and well, I picked up a good sized check and slipped it into the cross cut shredder. I saw what i was doing but my brain did not communicate with my hand.
They issued me a new one.

and then what? write the affiliate a letter asking them why they didn't cash it, then deduct the cost of postage, the time and the program from the offenders check?

Some programs don't even have a basic payouts page, so unless you receive a regular check from them you won't even know the check has been lost.
Your stats should show if you have money coming or not. If you have money that hasn't arrived, contact the sponsor.

If I get a returned check I go thru hoops to contact the affiliate to make sure we have their current address, but I will be damned if I am going keep contacting people asking why they haven't cashed their checks yet.

While we are on the subject, I sent out an email to all SexPicturesPass affiliates 2 weeks ago informing them that SPP Productions, Inc had moved from Indiana to California. We are closing the Indiana bank account on December 16, 2006. If there are any affiliates reading this that have outstanding checks, please have them cashed before then.

                                  Thank you.

lol, I hope you don't have any international affiliates, cos there's a good chance a check issued by you in mid November will hit your old bank after you close the account.

Except we already started issuing checks from the California account beginning with the last pay period. They have plenty of time. We did think this out.

Unbelievable.. You need someone to wipe your ass as well.. Grow up and take responsiblity for your own shit.

As do most programs, so there's no problems there. I agree that in this case it's up to the affiliate to confirm that what has been sent by the program has been received by the affiliate.

Unfortunately there are some programs that don't offer this basic information, and it's not always easy to figure out what you're owed from the sales stats. I have had mail lost before.

All I was suggesting is that a program could run an occasional audit to find extremely old checks, like 6 months plus, that are likely to have been uncashed due to mail loss or some other problem. Banks supply electronic CSV data, right?

We also have that feature in our stats area so you can view which payments have been sent.

Because most of the time affiliates freak out of their checks are 30 minutes late. If the affiliate doesnt get paid, for whatever reason, the program will know. no need to track them down.
