well, thanks for your input you guys.
i did buy it a couple days ago, and i can tell you that it really does work, i can actually use it in places i can't even get a cell call out, tested it surrounded by trees in the game preserve near my house where i got zero bars on my t-mobile cellphone, running on a 3 year old laptop with the pc5740 card.
i'm totally jazzed.
